עיין; a. fr. -- 2) to hold in suspense, leave undecided, leave
in doubtt; to be suspended. Yoma VIII, 8 הוא ההמורות ועל
וכ׳ עד תולה as to heavy sins, he (who repents) is in
suspense (will neither be punished nor acquitted), until
the Day of Atonement comes and brings forgiveness.
Tanh. Sh'moth 20 וכ׳ חטאיו על תולה וכשאני when Isuspend
judgment for a man's sins, I am called El Shadday. Sot.
III, 4 לה תולה היתה . . . אם if she (the Sotah) has any
merit, it will create suspension of punishment for her;
וכ׳ אהת שנה תולה זכות יש some merits create a suspension
of one year, some of two &c. Ib. 5 וכ׳ במים תולה זכות אין
in the case of testing waters merit causes no suspension.
Pes. I, 4 וכ׳ חמש כל ותולין . . אוכלין you may eat (leaven-
ed bread on the eve of Passover) to four hours of the
day, and hold it in suspense during the fifth hour, and
burn it &c. Ib. 5 וכ׳ אוכלין לא תולין they held it in suspense

Nif. נתלה to be hanged. Snh. VI, 4 ואין נתלה האיש
נתלית האשה a man (stoned to death) is hanged, but a.
woman must not be hanged. Ib. נתלין . . . כל all persons
that are put to death by stoning are afterwards hanged.

תליא m. (preced.) hook, string (for suspending). Sabb. 140b, v. תלא. Hull. 59a דליביה ת׳ מתעקר the cord on which his heart hangs (the pericardium) will break.
תלייה f. (תלה) 1) suspension, hanging. Snh. 46b אחד ת׳ מצות .. קושר one ties (the body of the stoned culprit to the pole), and one unties, in order to comply form- ally with the command of hanging (Deut. XXI, 22). -- 2) suspense, doubt. Y. Yoma VI, 43a top קבגו חטאת ועשהו יידהה שלא בת׳ 'and shall make it a sin-ofering (Le. XVI, 9), the text declares it a sin-offering even during the suspense, so that it cannot be removed from its desig- nation (by a subsequent event); וכ׳ שיזדווג בת׳ קבעו the text puts it in suspense (makes its designation dependent on a condition), that it be matched with its fellow (and it loses its sacred character if the fellow goat is unavail- able).
