The most complete system of Arithme- tic yet published. 2. HARLEY'S ARITHMETIC, GanUanha, 1st ed., Chinsura, 1819; 5th ed. 1846; pp. 96, 4 as., s. b. s., 3,000 copies sold. Combines the European and Native systems, gives the five chief rules, boat measurements, weights, the symbolical tables applicable to Integers, Fractions, the Rule of Three Direct and Inverse, Native Rules for calculating Areas and Solids, Rules in Verse — the author was Assistant in the Chinsurah Government schools. 3. KHETTRAMOHAN'S ARITHMETICAL TA- BLES, DMrdpdt, St. P., 1 an., 6th ed., 1853, pp. 21, used . in the Hindu College Patshala, of which the author was head- master. 4. MAY'S ARITHMETIC, Meganita, 2J as., 1st ed., 1818; 4th ed., 1852, 2 as., 8. b. s., pp. 50. According to the native system, in verse, selected from those employed • in the native schools. Many coincidences may be traced between these and the most improved kind adopted in schools in England. Met with a rapid sale among natives. DICTIONARIES. The £rst Bengali Dictionary was by Foster, a Civilian and Sanskrit Scholar, printed in 1799, in 2 vds. ; containing 18,000 words and sold for Rs. 60. The various applications of English • words, idioms and phrases are given in this, which have not been inserted in any subsequent Dictionary. In 1801 MILLER'S DICTIONARY was published by subscription containing matter equal to an 8vo. of 50 pp., for Rs. 82. In 1809 Pitam- bar Mukhurjea, of Utarpara, published the SHABDA SIN- DHU, or meanings in Bengali of the AMARA KOSH, a Sanskrit Dictionary.
