It is seldom met with separately, being incorporated into the Shishubodhdk or village School Manual. Digambar Kay published in 1840 a translation of it into English and Bengali. On behaviour to animals : to our family : to low and high persons : industry : self-reliance : humility : temperance health : contentment : frugality : mercy : forgiveness : mild- ness : honesty : debt : promises : truth : patriotism, &c. &c, The remarks on each of these virtues is illustrated by one or more historical anecdotes. The style is elegant and in 3 years the work has passed through 3 editions, a 4th is in the press. 41. (S. B.) CHATAK ASHTAK. Moral Allegory, pp. 5, 1854, i anna. Roz. and Co. Kalidas*s beautiful Allegory drawn from the Chatak a bird like a cuckoo, which is fabled to drink no water, but that from the clouds— used as a symbol of the soul aspiring only after heavenly enjoyments. B. 4 anna, by Nabakanta of Bahirgachhi. Answers to the following questions given by King Vikramadityea: — Who is a liberal man ? What is avarice ? "Who is a warrior ? What does patience consist in ? The answers are very pithy. Raja Kali Krishna published an English translation of it. 43. FEMALE EDUCATION, Gaur Mohan's De- fence of; Stri Shikhya Bishaydk, 1st cd., 1818, 4th ed., 1854, 8. B. S. 2 as. Gives in simple language evidence in favor of the Education of Hindu females from the examples of illus- trious ones both ancient and modern, and particularly of Indian females, such as Bukhmini, Khana, Vidyealankar who gave lectures at Benares on the Shastras, Sundari of Firudpur skilled in logic, Ahalya Bhai who conversed in Sanskrit and erected many public buildings. It shews the use of learning to women in settling their accounts, corresponding with their husbands and teaching their children. This work excited the fierce ire of some of the native papers, and in 1840 was pub- lished in opposition to it Stri Durachar pointing out the evD- deeds of women.
