Thoma- son, father of the late Lieut.- Governor of the North Western Provinces, who on his visit to the Burdwan Schools in 1818 was forcibly struck with the advantages practically resulting from the mode of instruction by narratives with morals annexed. Robinson, for the Vernacular Literature Committee— a second edition is now in the press. It is calculated to teach many moral lessons to the Hindus, the use of a mechanical taste : the importance of self-reliance : the evils of disobedience to parents : faith in God. It is illustrated by 18 wood cuts. 64. (S. T.) ShakantaM, TALE OF SHAKANTALA, S. P., 1854, pp. 112, 12 as. By Ishwar Chandra Videasagar. An interesting tale of the affections introducing us to forest scenery, and the mode of life of Hindu damsels 1,800 yean ago. The original drama is the master-piece of Xalidas. 65. (S.T.) Shakantalar Upakhyean, TALE OF SHA- KANTALA, A. I. U., 1854, pp. 59, by Ramlal Mittra. 4 as., gives in prose the substance of the beautiful tale of affection, the Sanskrit Drama Sakantala translated into English, by Sir W. Jones, its author was Kalidis, the English Shakespear ; this drama has been translated into German, and French. 66. (S. B.) Shanti Shatak, 1860, Roz. & Co.,pp. 46, 1st ed. 1817. ONE HUNDRED VERSES ADVOCATING PEACE OF MIND, pointing out like Ecclesiastes, the vanity of human things, and the benefits of solitude. Many Editions have been published. A translation of this into English was published by Raja Kali Krishna. It requires pruning. 67. (&.T.)
