The first Bengali Grammar was published by an Eng- lishman, Halhed, a Civilian, and Oriental Scholar, who • was so well acquainted with the language as sometimes to pass in disguise as a Native : it was printed at Hugly in 1778, and is a work of great value. Carey s appeared in 1801, which has passed through 4 editions. It was not till 1816 that a Native, Gangakishore Bhattacharjyea, published one, a diglot in the form of question and answer. In 1819 was published the Mugdabodh, in Sanskrit with a Bengali translation by Mathur- mohun Dutt, of Chinsura, pp. 55, extending to the rules of Sandhi.
