Pearson, Superintendent of the Govern- ment Vernacular Schools at Chinsura, published in 1819, Pat- riate Bibaran y 2nd ed. 1827, 8. b. 8., a translation of the most important parts of Dr. Bell's instructions for modelling and conducting schools ; a re-print with modifications of this work would be very useful in giving advice to native teachers rela- tive to improved modes and means of tuition. It treats of the shape of school houses ; rules for classes ; rules for teach- ing reading : examples of questioning in teaching ; on spell- ing and the various rules of Arithmetic : bad practices in a school ; a teacher's duties. W. C. Tucker, Esq., Commis- sioner of Benares, has published an excellent work NOTES ON EDUCATION, a translation of the chief portion of which would be of great use as a guide to teachers of village schools. SPEWING LESSONS. In 1 816 was published Lipi Dhara, Ser P., pp. 12. The alphabet is given according to the shape of the letters thus, those angular are put together : the consonants and compound con- sonants : 760 characters. In 1818 Captain Stewart published short reading lessons, the same year J. Pearson published a similar work. In 1820 Raja Radhakant Deb published a Spell- ing Book, pp. 256 ; in it the various names used by the different castes were given, Ethical reading lessons, words exactly the same in sound, but differing in spelling, signification or spelt ; pronounced alike, but different in meaning. Words of a double meaning : figurative terms ; rules for spelling — one of the best Spelling Books ever published. In 1822 an ANGLO BEN- GALI GUIDE to the reading and pronunciation of English was published, pp. 152. The pronunciation of English words was given in Bengali letters — a sad confusion. In 1825 an Alphabet was published, with a picture illustrating each letter. In 1834 Shara Prasad Basa published a Romanized Spelling Book, pp. 14, has a drawing of Mr. Treveliun, teaching a class under whose auspices it was published, but the Bengalis would not read the foreign character. The same vear was published the ENGLISH SELF-INSTRUCTOU, pp. 64. In 1835 Ishwar Chandra Basa published the Shabda Sur on Spelling. In 183G
