The baronetcy was conferred by Charles II. upon Sir Alexander Bannerman for "his constant loyalty dining the Rebellion, and of the heavy calamities he had suffered on that account." The 3rd baronet raised a regiment, and was with it at the battle of Culloden. His son, the 4th baronet, sold the Elsick estate for a nominal price, having been threatened with forfeiture on account of his father's and his own alleged participation in the rebellion of 1745.
