HAYES, CAPTAIN M. HORACE ( ? –1904)

F.R.C.V.S : served in the R.A., Bengal Staff Corps and the Buffs : author of many books on Horses and Horsemanship, including Indian Racing Reminiscences, Veterinary Notes for Horse-owners, 1884; Practical Horsemanship, 1891; A Guide to Training and Horse Management in India, 1896; Illustrated Horse-breaking, 1896; Riding and Hunting, 1901; Horses on Board Ship, 1902 : died Aug. 1904.

KAYTHORNE, SIR EDMUND (1818–1888)

Son of John Haythorne : born 1818 : educated at Sandhurst : entered the Army 1837 : served in the 98th in China, 1841–3 : A.D.C. to Sir Colin Campbell in the Panjab campaign, 1848–9, at all the battles : at the forcing of the Kohat Pass by Sir C. Napier, 1850 : in the Mohmand expedition, 1851 : in the Crimea : Chief of the Staff in China, 1859–60 : Adjutant-General in Bengal, 1860–5 : K.C.B., 1873 : General, 1879 : died Oct. 18, 1888.

HAYWARD, GEORGE W. ( ? –1870)

Traveller : envoy of the Geographical Society : went to Yasin in 1869, when the Yasin chief, Mir Wall, enlisted his support against the Maharaja of Kashmir : went again to Yasin, on his way to the Pamir steppe : Mir Wall had him killed, perhaps through anger, fear, or cupidity, the Governor of Chitral, Amin-ul-Mulk, being implicated, in July, 1870.

HEARSEY, HYDER YOUNG (1782–3 –1840)

Major : son of Captain Harry Thomas Hearsey by a Jat lady: born Dec. 1782 or 1783 : was sent to England for his education : entered Sindia's service under Perron, and afterwards served under George Thomas (q.v.), the adventurer, being with him when he surrendered Georgeghar to Bourguien, Sindia's general. In 1804 he joined Lord' Lake and fought at Deeg. He explored the sources of the Jamna and Ganges and visited Chinese Tartary to the Mansarowar Lake. In 1815 he fought against the Gurkhas, was taken prisoner by the Nipalese, and released at the treaty of Segowlie. He helped to quell an insurrection at Bareli in 1816, and was at the siege of Bhartpur : died at his house at Kareli, near Budaon, Aug. 5, 1840.

HEARSEY, SIR JOHN RENNET (1793–1865)

Lt-General : son of Lt-Colonel Andrew Wilson Hearsey : born at Midnapur, 1793 : Cornet in the 6th Bengal Cavalry : served in Bundelkund, Rewa and the Pindari war : distinguished himself at Sitabaldi, Nagpur, and battles in the Mahratta war : at Bhartpur, Deeg, Chilianwala and Gujarat : suppressed mutiny in a native regiment at Wazirabad, 1849 : C.B : in 1857 was in command of the Division at Barrackpur, when the native troops showed disaffection, which he reported to Government : showed personal bravery on the occasion of the outbreak of Mangal Pandi, March 29, 1857 : disbanded the 19th N.I. : and gained credit for his conduct through-out the mutiny : K.C.B : commanded the 6th Bengal Light Cavalry, and, later, the 21st Hussars : died at Boulogne, Oct. 23, 1865.

HEAVISIDE, REV. JAMES WILLIAM LUCAS (1808–1897)

Educated at Trinity and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge : B.A., 1830 : 2nd Wrangler, Smith's Prizeman and Fellow : Professor of Mathematics at Haileybury, 1838–58 : Canon of Norwich, 1860 : died March 5, 1897.

HEBER, RIGHT REV. REGINALD (1783–1826)

Bishop of Calcutta : born April 21, 1783 : son of Rev. Reginald Heber : educated at Whitchurch and privately : at Brasenose College, Oxford : wrote the Carmen Saeculare, 1800 : gained the English verse prize for his "Palestine" in 1803 : and the English Essay Prize in 1805 : Fellow of All Souls' College in 1805. After a tour of nearly two years in Europe, he was ordained, 1807 : held the living of Hodnet from that year : Prebendary of St. Asaph, 1812 : was appointed Bishop of Calcutta, 1822, which he accepted with much hesitation : completed Bishop's College, Calcutta : travelled continually, performing his episcopal duties, through the whole of India, and in Ceylon, as shown
