I. Co. from 1857 : D.C.L. Oxford, 1858 : died July 22, 1884.

PEEL, SIR WILLIAM (1824–1858)

Born Nov. 2, 1824 : third son of Sir Robert Peel, the Prime Minister : entered the Royal Navy in 1838 : saw service in the Mediterranean station, China, in the Pacific, N. America, W. Indies : Captain, 1849 : travelled, and wrote A Ride through the Nubian Desert, 1852 : with the Naval Brigade at Sebastopol : gained his V.C. and C.B : in the Indian mutiny, commanded the Shannon up to Calcutta, and formed and led the Naval Brigade up country, comprising ten 8 inch guns : in a number of actions : K.C.B. 1858 : at the relief of Lucknow,March 1858, severely wounded : died of smallpox at Cawnpur, April 27, 1858 : conspicuous by his bravery and personal example : a statue was erected to him at Calcutta.
