Beazley, Robert, was a burgess from Isle of Wight in the assembly of 1655-1656.

Beckwith, Sir Marmaduke, son of Sir Roger lieckwith. knight baronet, in Aid- borough, Yorkshire, England, came to \'ir- ginia about 1709, settled in Richmond county, and was clerk of the county till 1748. He married Elizabeth Brocken- brough. and was living in 1770 at a very advanced age. He left issue. Sir Jennings Beckwith and (jthers.

Bell, Henry, was a burgess for Bucking- ham county from Feb. 10, 1772, to the end of the session May 5. 1774.

Bell, Rev. John, succeeded Andrew Jack- son as minister of Lancaster county in 1710, and held office till 1743. He was a man of means, owning land in Lancaster and Prince William and forty-three slaves.

Bell, John, burgess for Prince William cC'Unty in the assembly of 1 756-1758.

Benn, Capt. James, was burgess for Isle of Wight county in 1696-1697. and died the latter }ear. Ills wife was Jane, daughter or Col. Arthur Smith. He left issue Arthur, James. ( ieorge. Mary, Jane and Anne.

Bennett, Philip, was kinsman of Gov. Richard P.ennett. member of the house of burgesses for Upper Norfolk (Nansemond) in 1644-45 ' he was a Puritan and w^as sent to New England in 1642 to procure minis- ters for the Puritan congregation in Nanse- mond and Lower Norfolk counties.

Bennett, Thomas, was a burtress for Mul-


berry Island in the assembly that convened Sept. 4. 1632.

Benskin, Henry, a royalist, son of P'rancis Benskin. Esq.. of St. ]\Iartin's-in-the-Field. Middlesex, England, came to Virginia with Sir Thomas Lunsford, in 1649. ^^ settled ill Nevs' Kent and died about 1692, leaving issue, two daughters, Mary, who married AX'illiam Harman, and Frances, who married William Marston, of James City county.

Bentley, Matthew, was a shoemaker, who was one of Bacon's leading officers in the kai)pahannock Neck. He was a man of means and appears as defendant in many suits for damages after the rebellion. He married ]\Iar}- Willis, a widow of Thomas Willis.

Bentley, William, came in 1624, "a new planter." member of the house of burgesses iv. Oct.. 1629.

Berkeley, Edmund, of 'Barn Elms,"' son of Col. Edmund Berkeley and Mary, daugh- ter of Thomas Nelson, was burgess for Middlesex county at the third session of ll;e assembly of 1769-1771. He was burgess again in 1772-1774, I775-I776. and member (.1 the convention of 1774- ^775- ^77^^- ^^is v,-ill was proved and recorded in ^liddlesex July 26, 1802.

Berkeley, Capt. William, was a l)urgess from New Ker;t county in the assembly that convened Oct. 23, 1666.

Bernard, Richard, came from luigland to \ irginia about 1647. He was born in Pets- w^orth, Buckinghamshire in 1618, and mar- ried in 1634 Anne Corderoy (born 1620). He Ujcated afterward at '•Purton in Glou- cester countv. which has been identified
