Mrs. Margaret Meredith, widow of Samuel Meredith Sr., of Hanover.

Cabell, William, Jr., son of Dr. William L aljcll, the immigrant, was born ]^larch 13, J 730; received a good education and held many offices ; he was sub-sheriff of Albe- m.arle county in 1751 ; captain of a company in the I'rench and Indian war, and in 1760 w as colonel of the militia of Albemarle. He was also a burgess for Albemarle county in 1758- 1 761. When Amherst county was formed, in 1761, he held all the leading offices. He was president of the county court, coroner, surveyor, vestryman, county lieutenant, and from 1761 to 1775 was a burgess. He also represented Amherst in the conventions of 1775 and 1776. He was, nKjreover, a member of the public commit- tee of safety. During the revolution he was state senator; after it was over, a member of the constitutional con\ention of 1788. His residence was known as "Union Hill." He died March 23, 1798.

Callaway, James, son of Colonel William La.lla\va\, was colonel and afterwards county lieutenant of Bedford county during the revolution ; served in the French and Indian war; operated iron works and 'lead mines; burgess for Bedford at the assembly of 1766-1768. He died near New London, Campbell county. November i, 1809.

Callaway, William, founder of New Lon- don, in Campbell county; county lieutenant of Bedford county during the French and Indian war. and burgess from Bedford county from 1754 to 1765. He married Eliz- abeth Tilley, and was father of James Calla- way (q. V. ).

Callicut, William, a silversmith, wh.j in


1608 accompanied Christopher Newport in his expedition to the Monacan country and was the first to discover the veins of gold and siher that traverse I'huanna county.

Caithorpe, Colonel Christopher, came to \ irginia in 1O22, and was the second son of Christopher Caithorpe, Esq., of Blakeney, Norfolk county, England, and Maud, his wife, daughter and co-heir of John Thurs- ton, Esq., of Brome, county Norfolk, and grandson of Sir James Caithorpe, of Stirs- ton, in Suffolk, and Barbara Bacon, his wife. He settled in York county, of which in 1658 he was colonel commanding the militia and justice of the peace. He was burgess for York count}- in 1644, 1*^*45) 1653 '^"<^ iC>6o. Alay 27,, 1661, a commission of administra- tion of his estate was granted to his relict Anne. He has many descendants in Vir- ginia and the south (^see "William and Mary (Juarterly," ii, 106-112; 160-1O8 for Cai- thorpe famil}j.

Calvert, Cornelius, came from Lancaster county, England. He was justice of Nor- folk county, July 18, 1729, to January 17, 1730; for many years member of the com- mon council of Norfolk borough. He mar- ried yisivy Saunders, July 29, 1718, in Prin- cess Anne county, and died in 1748, leaving

among other children Cornelius Calvert Jr. /

Calvert, Cornelius, was son of Cornelius Cahert and Mary Saunders; was a promi- nent merchant of Norfolk. He was born March 13, 1723 ; married, June 19, 1749, Eliz- abeth Thoroughgood, daughter of John Thoroughgood. In 1776 he was member of the association called "The Sons of Liberty." lie had issue — Saunders T. Calvert; Ann. wife of James Tucker, and Mary, wife of William W'alke.
