The Seven Wise Mistresses.
C H A P. I.
The Empress Lucretia commits her Daughter Sabrina to to the care of the Seven Wise Mistresses, who having tutored her return her to her Mother, with her behaviour.
IN the city of Rome, reigned the Empress
Lucretia, who had a beautiful daughter
named Sabrina. When she was six years old
the Emperor her father died and her mother
committed her to the care of Seven Wise
Mistresses famous for wisdom, and resolving
hard questions, and for skill and learning
exceeded all women in the world. She having
been with them seven years, they appointed
a day to try her proficiency in learning, and
put the three following questions to her:
I. What is the most acceptable thing to God?—She answered, To obey willingly all his commandments.
