The raw silk is taken from the reel and twisted into skeins and placed in bundles. These bundles are packed in bales for shipment. This picture shows the raw silk in bales as it is received in this country. Here the bales are weighed and then opened and the bundles of skeins placed on shelves, ready for use.

The skeins of raw silk, after having been soaked to soften the gum, are taken to the winding room which we see here You will see the skeins placed on two long rows of swifts, one above and one below From these the silk is wound onto bobbins, or large spools, which yon see in the center, under the operator's hand!
