I. fiat, 1. c.39, being furhmone'd to the fame Parliament, and alfo by the grievous Complaint of the People, did perceive great 'Damage to be done to him, and great Oppref- lions and Difherifances to his People, by reafdn un- fufficient : Sheriffs and Hundreders have been before' this Time, and. yet be in the Realm ;" (2) our Lord' the King, intending to efchew fuch evil Oppreffions and'Difneritanees-.hy the Affent of the Prelates, Earls, Barons, and other great Eftates aforefaid, hath or- dained and eftablifhed in the faid Parliament,, That; the Sheriffs from henceforth fhall be affigned by the Chancellor,. Treafu.rer,j ^Barons', of the ' Exchequer, ' andby the Juftices ; (3) and in the Abjence of the Chancellor, by the Treafurer, Barons^ and Juftices. {4) And- that none fhall be Sheriff, except he have fufficient Land~ within the fame Shire where he fliall ■ be Sheriff, to; anfwer* the King and, his People. (s) J And'that none that is, Steward or Bailiff to- a great 1 Lord fhall be made Sheriff, excep.t he-,be out of Ser-' vice, fo that he may attend to execute the Office of a 1 Sheriff. for the King, and his People. (6) And/ in- like Manner it is agreed and eftabliihed, that Hun- dreds, whether they belong to the King, or to other, fhall be kept by convenient and able Perfpns, that have fufficient Land,witbjn the fame Hundred or Shire where the Hundred : is ; arid that the. Chancellor, Treafurer,- Barons'*, and, Juftices fhall do. and affign in Manner., aforefaid, without having other Regard. ■ (7) And if any Sheriffs or Hundreders be infufficient - at this Time,- they fhallibe, removed, and other more convenient put in their Rooms. (8) And that fuch Hundreds be leafed and bailed to fuch Penfons for a reafonable Rent, fo that they need not to ufe Ex- tortion upon the People by reafon of too outragious Ferm ; (9) and that no Sheriff nor Hundreder fhall Ieafe his Office, to any.other in Perm or otherwise.
