Declaration, Interpretation, and Expofition of this Statute, that is to fay, upon Writs of Diftreffes before Juftices or Juftice of Nifi prius within the faid City, (3) and that upon all other Writs and Proceffes, that be and fliall be awarded out of the faid Courts or Exchequer, it mall be lawful to the Sheriffs for the time being, to make their Returns according to the Order of the Law, as the Sheriffs of London were wont to do before the making of the faid Statute, with- out any Lofs or Forfeiture. CAP. VI. An Aft concerning Surgeons to be difcharged of Quefts and other Things. e QHeweth unto your defcreet Wifdoms, your humble Orators the Wardens and Fellowfhip of the Craft c O and Myftery of Surgeons enfranchised in the City of London^ not palling in Number Twelve Perfons, ' that whereas they and their Predeceffors, from the Time that no Mind is to the contrary, as well in this ' noble City of London, as in all other Cities and Boroughs within this Realm, or elfewhere, for the con- ' tinual Service and Attendance that they daily and nightly, at all Hours and Times, give to the King's ' liege People, for the Relief of the fame, according to their Science, have been exempt and difcharged ' from all Offices and Bufinefs wherein they fhould ufe or bear any Manner of Armour or Weapon, and
- with like Privilege have been intreated as Heralds of Arms, as well in Battles and Fields, as other Places,
- there for to ftand unharneffed and unweaponed, according to the Law of Arms, becaufe they be Perfons
' that never ufed Feats of War nor ought to ufe, but only the Bufinefs and exercife of their Science, to ' the Help and Comfort of the King's liege People in the Time of their Need : (2) And in the aforefaid ' City of London, from the Time of their firft Incorporation, when they have been many mo in Number

' they fhould ufe or occupy any Armour or defenceable Geer of War, where through they fhould be un- ' ready, and lett d to practife their Cure of Men bein* in Peril :' (3) Therefore, for that there be fo fmall Number of the faid Fellowfhip of the Craft and Myftery of Surgeons, in regard of the great Multitude of Patients that be, and daily chance, and infortune happeneth and increafeth in the forefaid City of London, and that many of the King's liege People fuddenly wounded and hurt, for Default of Help in Time to them to be fhewed, perifb, and fo divers have done, as evidently is known, by Occafion that your faid Suppliants have been compelled to attend upon fuch Conftablefhip, Watches, and Juries, as is aforefaid ; (4) be it enacted and eftablifhed by the King our Sovereign Lord, and the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and by the Commons, in this prefent Parliament afTembled, and by Authority of the fame, That from henceforth your faid Suppliants be difcharged, and not chargeable of Conftablefhip, Watch, and of alf Manner of Office bearing any Armour, and alfo of all Inquefts and Juries within the City of London : (5) And alfo that this Aft in all Things do extend to all Barber-Surgeons admitted and approved to exer- cife the faid Myftery of Surgeons, according to the Form of the Statute lately made in that Behalf, fo that they exceed not, ne be at one Time above the Number of Twelve Perfons. , 42.
