An Afl to prevent and fupprefs feditious Conventicles. OR providing further and more fpeedy Remedies againfl the growing and dangerous Praftices of fe- tlitious Seftaries and other dilloyal Perfons, who under Pretence of tender Confciences have or may ' at their Meetings contrive Infijrreftions (as late Experience hath fhewn) ;' (2) Be it enafted by the King's moft Excellent Majefty, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this prefent Parliament aflembled, and by Authority of the fame, That if any Perfon of the Age of fixteen Years or upwards, being a Subjeft of this Realm, at any Time after the tenth Day of May next fhall be prefent at any Aflembly, Conventicle or Meeting, under Colour or Pretence of any Exer- cife of Religion, in other Manner than according to the Liturgy and Praftice of the Church of £//^/a»^, in any Place within the Kingdom of England, Dominion of Wales or Town of Bervjick upon Tweed, at which Conventicle, Meeting or Aflembly, there fliall be five Perfons or more afi'embled together, over and befides thofe of the fame Houfliold, if it be in a Houfe v/here there is a Family inhabiting; or if it be in a Houfe, Field or Place where there is no Family inhabiting. Then where any five Perfons or more are (a aflembled as aforefaid ; it fhall and may be lawful to and for any one or more Juftices of the Peace of the County, Limit, Divifion, Corporation or Liberty, wherein the Offence aforefaid fhall be committed, .or fenocis muftbe for the Chief Magiftrate of the Place where fuch Oftence aforefaid fliall be committed, and he and they are convifted. hereby required and enjoined, upon Proof to him or them refpeftively made of fuch Offence either by ConfefHon of the Party or Oath of two Witnefl'es, (3) (which Oath the faid Juftice and Juftices of the Peace, and Chief Magiftrate refpeftively, are hereby im.powered and required to adminifter j or by notorious Evidence and Circumftance of the Faft, to make 3 Record of every fuch Offence under his or their Hands , . , and Seals refpeftively : V/hich Record fo made as aforefaid, fhall to all Intents and Purpofes be in Law taken the firft Oftc'nce! ^"'^ adjudged to be a full and perfeft Conviftion of every fuch Offender for fuch Offence ; and thereupon The Record anil the faid Juftice, Jufticcs and Chief Magiftrate refpeftively, fhall impofe on every fuch Offender fo convifll Conviaion to be as aforefaid, a Fine of five Shillings for fuch firft Offence ; which Record and Conviftion fnall be certified returned to the by the faid Juftice, Tuftices or Chief Magiftrate, at the next Quarter-Seflions of the Peace for the County next Quarter- ^j. pjacc where the Offence was committed. °"^' II.
