And be it further enacTe.d, That it fliall and may be lawful to and for the Officer add O the faid Duties on Salt, at every unlading Port or Creek of fuch Ship or Veil.-!, to ■■ ■. I t,he (ail before the Delivery thereof, and to demand a Sight of fuch Cocquet fo to be given a weigh the Salt upon unlading the fame ; and if the Salt on the weighing the fame fhall be -found to be more t fa in Weight than what is contained in the faid Cocquet, that then the Surplufage that fhail exceed the '■ .Quan- tity contained in the faid Cocquet, fliall be forfeited ; the one Moiety thereof to the Ufe of his Majefty, his Heirs and Succefibrs, and the other Moiety thereof to the Pcrfon that fliall inform or fue for the fame ; ad if the Mafier of fuch Ship or Veffel fliall refufe to fliew tmto fuch Officer the faid Cocquet, upon dut: Requeft made, to the end he may fee whether the Salt fo unlading be the fame Quantity with that con- tained in the Cocquet, That (hen and in fuch Cafe it ihall be lawful for the laid Officer to feizc the faidq UCt produced, Salt and detain the fame, until the faid Cocquet be produced : Provided always, That if the faid Cocquet, haying been duly taken out, be not fiiewn to fuch Officer in lour Days after the Seizure thereof, That then and in fuch Cafe the Salt fo feized fliall be forfeited. ' XXII. And whereas the Importers of foreign Salt do, after they come into Port, and before they enter ' ttnd land the fame, or proceed further on their Voyage to fome other Port, frequently run Salt in Boats ' and other fmall Vefiels in the Night-time ; and if the. Officers difcover the fame, tie Perfons on board ' fuch Boats or other VeiTels not only refufe to fuffer the Officers to come on board to fee if they have any ' Salt in their Vefiels, but frequently beat and abufe them :' Be it enabled by the Authority aforefaid, That Officers of the from and after the four and twentieth Day of June one thoufand feveji hundred .and nineteen it fhall aiid Cuftoms or . s '; lt may be lawful to and' for the Officers of the C'uftoms, or the Officers of the Duties on Salt, and every of ^^vefle" tofee them, to go on board any Boat, Lighter or other Vefiel lying in any Port or Place or riding upon the Sea- if there be'any coafts, and to fearch the fame, and to fee if there be any Salt on board, and to fcize fuch Salt, in cafe the Salt there, &c. fame be found in any other VeiTel than that wherein fuch Salt was imported or brought into the faid Port or Place, unlefs the fame had been duly entred or the Duties paid or fecured ; and all fuch Salt fhall be for- feited and loft, or the Value thereof, to be recovered of the Adafter or Owner of fuch Boat or Vefiel, who fhall likewife be liable to all other Penalties and Forfeitures, as if the fame had been landed without Entring or Payment of the Duty; and every Perfon or Perfons who fhall obftrutSr or hinder any Officer or Qfficer-sHindrin'g Office* in going on board any fuch Boat or Vefiel and fearching the fame, fliall for every fuch Offence forfeit and tortei:s 4 oJ - lofe the Sum of forty Pounds. ' XXIII. And whereas by an AiSt made in the fecond Year of the Reign of her late Majefty Queen Anne, Recital of the ' intituled, An Aft for the better fecuring and regulating the Duties on Salt, reciting, That great Sums of Mo- Salt-act, z & j ' ney were paid out of the Duties upon Salt on account of Debentures for Salt fliipped to be exported to ' foreign Parts, which Salt was afterwards very often fraudulently relanded on the Coafts of England 'and ' Wales : It is enadfed, That no Salt whatfoever, being of the Produce or Manufacture of England, Wales,
- Benvick upon Tweed, Scotland or Ireland, nor any other Salt coming from Ireland, Scotland or the IJle of
i Man fiiall, after the firft Day of June one thoufand feven hundred and four, be imported or brought into ' any Port or Place within England, Wales or Berwick upon Tweed, nor taken out of any Ship or Vefiel, nor ' put on fhore within any of .the faid Ports or Places, upon Pain that all the Salt fo imported or brought in, ' taken out of any Ship or Vefiel, or landed or put on fhore contrary to the true Intent and Meaning thereof, ' fhall be forfeited and loft: and that the Ship or Vefiel in which any fuch Salt fhall be fo imported or brought ' in, or out of which any fuch Salt fhall be taken or put on fhore, together with all her Tackle and Apparel, ' fliall alfo be forfeited and loft ; and every Perfon that fhall take any fuch Salt out of any fuch Ship or Vefiel, ' or carry the fame on fhore, or convey the fame from the Shore when landed, or be aiding or affift- ■ ing therein, fhall forfeit the Sum of twenty Pounds for every fuch Offence or fuffer fix Months Im- ' prifonment : And whereas fome Doubts have arifen, whether Englijh Salt, which is not aclttally ex- ' ported to Parts beyond the Seas, but only put on board Boats, Barges, Ships or other Vefiels, in order ' to be exported, be within the Intent and Meaning of the faid A£t, although the P.evenue in fuch Gafe ' is liable to as great Frauds : And whereas great Frauds are frequently committed in rel-anding Fifh

' XXIV. And whereas the Importers of foreign Salt do frequently run the fame on fhore without - & 3 Ann. C.T4-. ' Entry or Payment of Duty; which evil Practice might in a great meafure be prevented, if more" r.-;< ien h.'.lt out fuitable Penalties were provided for difcouraging the fame:' Be it therefore enacted by the Au'^oritj^tr" f IZks aforefaid, That in cafe any foreign Salt fhall be landed or put on fhore before d-ue. Entry be made thereof I= o'i.' with the Collector or Officer appointed for the faid Duties on Salt in the Port or Place where the fame fhall be imported, or before the Duty thereon be fully fatisfied and paid, or without a Warrant for the landing thereof; every Perfon who fhall land or put the fame on fhore, or convey the fame from the Shore when landed, or be aiding or affifting therein, fliall, over and above the Penalties already given by Law for fuch Offence, forfeit and lofe the Sum of one hundred Pounds.
