An Act for the better viewing, fearching and examining of all Drugs, Medicines, Waters, Oils, Compoiitions, ufed or to be ufed for Medicines in all Places where the fame fhall be expofed to Sale, or kept for that Purpofe, within the City of London and Suburbs thereof, or within feven Miles Circuit of the faid City. I. ITT H E R E A S King Henry the Eighth, by his Letters Patent under the Great Seal, bearing VV Date at JVeJlminfter the twenty-third Day of September in the tenth Year of his Reign, for the Common Wealth of this Realm, in due exercifing and practifing of the Faculty of Phyfick, and good Miniftration of Medicines to be had, did erecf, found and eftablifh a College, Commonalty or Incor- poration of Phyficians in the City of London, to be, remain and have Exiftence for ever; and by the fame Letters Patent did further give and grant unto John Chambre, Thomas Linacre, Ferdinando de Vic- toria, Nicholas Ha/fewel, John Francis and Robert Yaxley, then learned, difcreet and profound Praclifers in the Faculty of fhyfick in the faid City of London, that they and all of the faid Faculty of Phyfick of and in the faid City, fhould for ever thenceforth be in Name and Deed one Body, and perpetual Com- monalty or College ; and further by the fame Letters Patent did give and grant unto the faid College and Commonalty' full Power, Ability and Authority for ever, annually to elect and make one of the faid College or Commonalty to be Prefident of the faid College or Commonalty, for the taking Care and governing thereof for that Year; and that the fame Prefident, College or Commonalty fhould have per- petual Succeffion, and a Common Seal for the Service of the faid Prefident and Commonalty for ever; and by the fame Letters Patent did alio further give and grant unto the faid Prefident, College and Com- monalty, and their Succeffors, that they the faid Prefident, College or Commonalty, and their Suc- ceffors, might lawfully, and without Danger, make among themfelves lawful Affemblies, and Statutes, and Ordinances, for the good Government, overfeeing and correcting of the faid College or Commonalty, and of all Men exercifing the fame Faculty in the faid City, or within feven Miles Circuit thereof, as Neceffity fhould require, when and as often as there fhould be Occafion ; and that none fhould exercife the faid Faculty in the faid City, or within feven Miles Circuit thereof, unlefs licenfed thereunto by the faid Prefident and Commonalty, or their Succeffors for the' Time being, by the Letters of the fame Prefident and College, fealed with their Common Seal, under the Penalty of one hundred Shillings for every Month in which he fhould exercife the faid Faculty, without being fo licenfed, half thereof to be applied to his faid Majefty and his Heirs, and half to the faid Prefident and College ; and by the fame' Letters Patent did further grant, That four Perfons fhould every Year be chofen by the faid Prefident and College for the Time being, and their Succeffors for ever, who fhould have the fupervifing and fearching, correcting and governing of all and every the Phyficians of the faid City ufing the Faculty of Phyfick in the fame City, and other Foreign Phyficians whomfoever, in any Manner ufing and pradtifing that Faculty of Phyfick within the faid City and the Suburbs thereof, or within feyen Miles Circuit of the fame City, and the punifhing of them for their Offences in not well executing, practifing or ufing that Faculty ; and alio the fupervifing and fearching of all Manner of Medicines, and the Receipts thereof, to be given, adminiftred and applied by the faid Phyficians, or any of them, to the faid King's Subjedls, for the curing and healing of their Infirmities, when and as often as there fhould be Occafion, for the Benefit and Advantage of the faid Subjects ; fo that the Punifhment of fuch Phyficians, ufing the. faid Faculty of Phyfick, fo offending in the Premiffes, might be executed by Fines, Amerciaments, Im- prifonmenjs of their Bodies, and by other fit and reafonable Ways : And whereas in the Parliament held at London the fifteenth Day of April in the fourteenth Year of the Reign of the faid King Henry the Eighth, and from thence adjourned to IVeJhninJler the laft Day of July in the fifteenth Year of the Reign of the fame King, and there held, reciting, That for.ifmuch as the making the faid Corporation, was meritorious, and very good for the Commonwealth of the Realm, it was enacfed, That the faid Corporation of the faid Commonalty and Fellowship of the Faculty of Phyfick aforefaid, and all and every Grant, Articles and other Things contained and fpecified in' the faid Letters Patent, fhould be approved, granted, ratified and confirmed in the fame Parliament, and clearly authorized and admitted 6 by
