  • among other Words, which by an Act of Parliament made in the firft Year of the Reign of their

' late Majefties King William and Queen Mary, are directed from thenceforth not to be enjoined ' or required, are contained the Words following; that is to fay, / A. B. do declare, that I will conform to 1 the Liturgy of the Church of England, as it is now by Law ejlabliftied ; upon Pain that all and every the ' Perfons laft mentioned, failing in fuch Subfcription, fhall lofe and forfeit fuch refpective Deanery, Pre- ' bend, Canonry, Mafterfhip, Headfhip, Fellowfhip, Profeffor's Place, Reader's Place, Ecclefiaftical ' Dignity or Promotion, Curate's Place, Lecture and School : And whereas feveral Perfons have through ' Inadvertency either wholly omitted to read the faid Prayers, and to make and fubfcribe the faid

  • feveral Declarations, or one of them, or have not done it within the Time, and in the Manner by

' Law required ; and have thereby incurred the Forfeitures in fuch Cafe inflict ed by the faid recited Act

  • TY7HEREAS the keeping a fufficient and well regulated Watch in the Night-time within the

4 VV great and populous Pariih of Saint Martin in the Fields, within the Liberties of the City oiTVeJi- ' min/ier, is of great Importance for the Prefervation of the Perfons and Properties of the Inhabitants

  • thereof, and very neceffary to prevent, as well the Mifchiefs which may happen from Fires, as Mur-

c ders, Burglaries, Robberies and other Outrages and Diforders : And whereas by the Laws now in ' being, no effectual Provifion is made for the eitablifhing, ordering or well governing of fuch a Nightly ' Watch, or for levying and collecting any Sums of Money for defraying the neceffary Charges thereof,

  • or for enforcing a due Application and juft Account of any Money fo levied and collected for that Pur-

c pofe : And whereas it hath been found by Experience, that the Bedels employed within the faid Pariih, 4 for want of a proper Regulation and Government of them, have been of great Charge and little Ufe to

  • the faid Parifh, and the Methods hitherto practifed of railing Monies for maintaining and paying the
  • faid Bedels have been alfo precarious and unwarrantable;' For Remedy of the aforefaid Inconveniencies,

may it pleafe your mo ft Excellent Majefty that it may be enacled, &c. " Veftry to meet on 3 May and 3 Nov. yearly, and appoint the Number of Watchmen and Bedels, and " fet down in Writing the Orders agreed on for regulating the Watch. ' Tranfcripts of the Regulations, " &c. figned by the Veftry Clerk, to be delivered to each Conftable. The Charges to be paid by an " half-yearly Affeffment, and may be levied by Diftrefs. Perfons aggrieved may appeal to the next " General Quarter-Sefiions, whofe Order to be final. The Affeffment not to exceed 4^. per Pound. " No Perfon paying the faid Affeffment, or chofen a Bedel or Watchman, to gain thereby a Settle- " ment. No hired Servant capable of being chofen a Bedel or Watchman. Collectors of the Affeff- " ment to account to the veftry on z6 July yearly, or oftener, if required. Yearly Accounts of Receipts " and Difburfements to be adjufted and figned at a Veftry by 20 Augujl, and lodged with the Veftry Clerk.

CAP. IX. An Act for enlarging the Term and Powers granted -by an Act paffed in the eleventh Year of his late Majefty King George the Firft, intituled, An Acl for repairing and amending the Road from Bigglefvvade in the County of Bedford, to Bugden, and through Alconbury, to the Top of Alconbury Hill, or Crofs Pofl, leading into Sautery Lane, on the York and Edinburgh Road, and from the faid Town of Bugden to the Town of Huntingdon, and from Crofs Hall in Eaton Soken in the faid County of Bedford, to Great Stoughton Common in faid County of Huntingdon. P R. The recited Act 11 Geo. 1. c. 20. is further continued for zi Years, &c. CAP. X. An Act for repairing and widening the Road leading from Saint Dunftan's Crofs near the City of Canter' bury, to the Waterfide at Whitjlable in the County of Kent. P R.
