An Act for enlarging the Term and Powers granted by an Act patted in the fifth Year of die Reign of his late Majefty King George the Firft, intituled, An Aft for repairing the Road from Beconsheld in the County of Bucks, to Stoken Church in the Comity of Oxon. P R. The recited private Act is further continued for 21 Years. CAP. XII. An Act to enable the Juftices of the Peace, acting for the Weftern Divifion of the County of Kent, to purchafe a convenient Piece of Ground for building a Gaol for the faid County, and for impowering the laid Juftices to apply Part of the County Stock of the faid Divifion towards the fame.   • Perfons are committed for Debts of very large Sums of Money ; all which Infufficiencies and Inconve-

4 niencies of the Gaol aforefaid have been prefented by the Grand Jury at the Afl12.es and General 4 Gaol Delivery held for the faid County : And whereas there is no Scite of Ground to enlarge the 4 faid Gaol, or to erect a Prifon and other Conveniencies for the fafe keeping of Debtors ; and forairnuch

  • as the Juftices of the Peace for the faid County cannot, by the Laws now in Force, raife a fufficient

4 Sum of Money upon the faid County, in order to purchafe a new Scite of Ground, and thereon build 4 a Gaol ; nor can they apply the Stock of the laid County, or any Part thereof, for the Purpofts afore-

" The Juftices at their General Quarter- Seffions may authorize Perfons to purchafe Ground in Maid- 44 ftone Pariih, to be vefted in the Truftees herein named. When the Truftees (hall be reduced to "Seven, others to be chofen, not exceeding Ten, &e. A convenient Gaol, with different Wards, 44 to be built. Part of the prefect County Stock to be applied towards die Charge thereof; the re- " maining Charge to be raifed by Affeffment at the Quarter-Seflions. CAP. XIII.   • TT J HE RE AS the keeping a fufficient and well regulated Watch in the Night-time within the

f y y p ar i{h of Saint Paul Covent Garden, within the Liberties of the City of Wejiminfter, is of great ' Importance for the Prefervation of thePerfons and Properties of the Inhabitants thereof, and very ne- 4 ceffary to prevent, as well the Mifchiefs which may happen from Fires, as Murders, Burglaries, Rob- ' beries, and other Outrages and Diforders : And whereas by the Laws now in being no effe&ual Provi- ' fion is made for the eftablilhing, ordering or well governing of fuch a Nightly Watch, or for levying and ' collecting any Sums of Money for defraying the neceffary Charges thereof, or for enforcing a due Appji- 4 cation and juft Account of any Money fo levied and collected for that Purpofe : And whereas it hath

  • ' been found by Experience, that the Bedels employed within the faid Pariih, for want of a proper Regu-

' lation and Government of them, have been of gre.it Charge and little Ufe to the faid Parifh, and the 'Methods hitherto practifed of railing Monies for maintaining, and paying the faid Bedels have been alfo ' precarious and unwarrantable;' For Remedy of the aforefaid Inconveniencies, may it pleafe your mod Excellent Majefty, that it may be. enacted, &e. " The Veftry, with other Perfons fpecified, to meet on 3 May and 3 Nov. yearly, and appoint the " Number of Watchmen and Bedels, and fet down in Writing the Orders agreed on for regulating the " Watch, Tranfcripts of the Regulations, &e. figned by the Veftry Clerk, to be delivered to each 44 Conftable. The Watchmen, in the Abfence of the Conftable, may apprehend Night-walkers, c?V. 44 The Charges to be paid by an half-yearly Affeffment. Perfons aggrieved may 'appeal to the next 41 Quarter-Seffions, whofe Order to be final. The Affeffment not to exceed 6d. per Pound. No Per- 44 fon paying the faid Affeffment, or chofen a Bedel or Watchman, to gain thereby a Settlement. No 44 hired Servant capable of being chofen a Bedel or Watchman. Collectors of the Affeffment to account 44 to the Veftry on 26 July yearly, or oftner, if required. Yearly Accounts of Receipts and Difburfe- " ments, to be adjufted and figned at a Veftry by 20 Auguft, and lodged wLh the Veftry Clerk. Per- " fous paying the faid Rates ducharged from Watch or Ward.
