An Act for laying a Duty upon Apples imported from Foreign Parts •, and for continuing an Act paiTed in the fourth Year of the Reign of his prefent Majefty, For granting an Allowance upon the Exportation of Britifh made Gunpowder ■, and for taking off the Draw- back upon Exportation of Foreign Paper •, and for the better fecuring the Payment of the Bounty on the Exportation of Britifh made Sail Cloth; and for giving further Time for the Payment of Duties omitted to be paid for the Indentures and Contracts of Clerks and Apprentices. ' W7 * jT -^ ^ ^^ ^ £ reat Frauds are anc * have been committed in the Importation of Apples from ' V V Foreign Parts to the Diminution of his Majefty's Revenue, in regard the fame are an unrated ' Commodity, and now fubject to and paying a Duty ad Valorem only upon the Oath of the Importer •* We Your Majefty's moft dutiful and loyal Subjects the Commons of Great Britain, in Parliament ailem- bled, do moft humbly befeech Your Majefty that it may be enacted; and be it enacted by the King's moft Excellent Majefty, by and with the Advice and Confent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this prefent Parliament affcmbled, and by the Authority of the fame, That there (hail be railed, levied, anfwered and paid unto and for the Ule of his Majefty, his Heirs and Succeflbrs, for and upon all Apples, which at any time or times after the twenty-fourth Day of June one thoufand feven hundred and thirty-feven, mall be imported or brought into the Kingdom of Great Britain, over Additional and above all Cuftoms, Subfidies, and Duties already impofed thereon, an additional Duty to be reek- Duty of as. per oned after the Rate of two Shillings for every Bufhel, and fo proportionably for a greater or Iefs Quan- Bufhei, t j t ^ tQ 1^ p a j j c ) own - m rea d v Money by the Importers from time to time before the Landing ot the fame refpectively. how to be le- II* And be it enacted by the Authority aforefaid, That the faid additional Duty upon Apples import- vied and ap- ed (hall be raifed, levied, recovered and paid, and be brought into his Majefty's Exchequer, and applied P liec1, (except the neceffary Charges of Management thereof) by fuch Rules, Ways, Means, and Methods- and under fuch Penalties and Forfeitures, and in fuch Manner and Form, as the other Duties upon Ap- ples imported, or any of them, are by any Act or Acts of Parliament prefcribed or appointed to be raif- ed, levied, recovered, anfwered, paid and applied. And whereas an Act palled in the fourth Year of the Reign of his prefent Majefty, intituled, c. 29. continued ' An Aft for granting an Allowance upon the Exportation of Britifh made Gunpowder, is near expiringj '"continued by ' which Act hath been found very ufeful and beneficial to his Majefty's trading Subjects;' Beit fur-- 24 Geo. 2. c.52.' ther enacted by the Authority aforefaid, That the faid laft mentioned Act, and ail and every the Au- And farther by thorifies, Powers and Claufes therein contained, (hall be and continue in full Force, and (hall be ex- 31 Ceo. 2. c, 36. ecutec j 5 from and after the Expiration of the Term thereby granted for and during the further Term of feven Years, and from thence to the End of the then next Seflion of Parliament, in as full and ample Manner as if the fame were again repeated and re-enacted in the Body of this pre- fent Act. ' IV. And whereas the Drawbacks allowed upon the Exportation of foreign Paper tend to the great
- Difcouragement of the Manufacture of Paper within the Kingdom of Great Britain;' Be it therefore
enacted by the Authority aforefaid, That from and after the twenty-fourth Day of June one thoufand feven hundred and thirty-feven, there (hall not be allowed or made on the Re-exportation of any foreign No Drawback Paper any Drawback or Repayment of any cf the Cuftoms or Duties charged and paid on the Importa- on foreign Fa- tion thereof into this Kingdom, by any Act or Acts of Parliament; any Law, Cuftom or Ufage to per exported. the contrary thereof in any wife notwithftanding. ' Pence for every Ell of Britifh made Sail Cloth or Canvas fit for or made into Sails, exported by way ' of Merchandize, payable out of the faid additional Duty of one Penny per Ell on foreign made ' Sails and Sail Cloth imported; and forafmuch as in many Ports of this Kingdom, from which ' Britijl) made Sail Cloth is exported, there is not fo much Money collected and received for the ' faid additional Duty of one Penny per Ell, as is or may be fufficient to pay the faid Reward c or Recompence, whereby the Exporters at fuch Ports are under great Difcouragement, and can- ' not have the Benefit of the faid Reward or Recompence as in other Ports, where fuch Reward Reward due to ' or & eccm P ence - s duly paid;' For Remedy thereof, be it enacted by the Authority aforefaid, Exporters of That if the Collector of the Cuftoms in any Port of this Kingdom (hall not have fufficient Money Britifh sail in his Hands arifing by the faid additional Duty of one Penny per Ell, to fatisfy and pay fuch Re- be°paid °in cafe war ^ or Recompence, as is or (hall be due^ to any Exporters of Britijb made Sail Cloth or Sails the Collectors as aforefaid, that tiien fuch Collector (hall give to the Perfon intitled to fuch Reward or Recom- o( Cuftoms pence a Certificate under his Hand attefted by the Comptroller, of what is due to fuch Perfon for fateK Money. fuch ^ r!f i/ h Sail Cloth or Sails fo exported, certifying to the Commimoners of the Cuftoms at Lon- don
