D. 1744, Poors Rates to J n this prefent Parliament affembled, and by the Authority of the fame, That from and after the firft Day I'he'alurcb '" °^ ^ a? one thou ^ anc ' f eve n hundred and forty-four, the Churchwardens and Overfeers, or other Perfons authorized to take Care of the Poor in every Parifh, Townfhip or Place, fhall give or caufe to be given, publick Notice in the Church, of every Rate for the Relief of the Poor,, allowed by the Juftices of Peace, the next Sunday after the fame fhall have been fo allowed; and that no Rate fhall be efteemed or reputed valid and fufficient, fo as to collect and raife the fame, unlefs fuch Notice fhall have been given. The Rates to be II. And be it further enacted, That the Churchwardens and Overfeers of the Poor, or other Perfons inipefled by any authorized as aforefaid, in every Parifh, Townfhip or Place, fhall permit all and every the Inhabitants Inhabitant, and f the f a id Parifh, Townfhip or Place, to infpect every fuch Rate at all feafonable Times, paying one copies u en. Shilling for the fame, and fhall upon Demand forthwith give Copies of the fame or any Part thereof, to any Inhabitant of the faid Parifh, Townfhip or Place, paying at the Rate of fix Pence for every twenty- four Names. Parifh, or Place from whence they have been legally removed by order of two Juftices- of the Peace,, without bringing a Certificate from the Parifh or Place whereunto they belong; and alfo all, Perfons who, not having wherewith to maintain themfelves, live idle without Employment, and refufe to> work, for the ufual and common Wages given to other Labourers itv the like Work, in, the Parifhes or Places where they then are; and alfo all Perfons going about from Door to Door, or placing themfelves in Streets, Highways or Paffages, to beg. or gather Alms in the Parifhes or Places where they dwell, fhall be deemed idle and diforderly Perfons-; and it fhall and may be lawful. "lis own to the kept to hard Labour for any Time not exceeding one Month : And it fhall and may be lawful for any Perfon, to apprehend and carry before a Juftice of the Peace, any fuch Perfons going about from Door to Door, or placing themfelves in Streets, Highways or Paffages, to beg, Offences of a or gather Alms in the Parifhes or Places where they dwell; and if they fhall refifty or efcape from the Per- higher Nature., fon apprehending them, they fhall be fubject to the fame Punifhment as Rogues and Vagabonds are made liable to by this Act : And it fhall and may be lawful for the faid Juftice, by Warrant under his Hand and Seal,, to order any Overfeer of the Poor of the Parifh or Place where fuch Offender fhall be appre- Sive Shillings hended,. to pay the Sum of five Shillings to any Perfon or Perfons in any fuch Parifh or Place fo appre- R T ar d f °' Of nencl ' n 5 them, for every Offender fo apprehended; which Sum fhall be allowed to fuch Overfeer in his Anders. Account, be producing the Juftice's Order, and a Receipt under the Hand of the Perfon. or Perfons to Penalty on O. whom fuch Sum was paid : But if fuch Overfeer fhall neglect or refufe to pay the faid Sum,, the faid Ju-i verfeer not pay* ftice, on Oath thereof made, may by Warrant under his Hand and Seal, order the fame to be levied by jog the Rewavd. Diftrefs and Sale of the Goods of fuch Overfeer; and the Overplus (if any) after the Charges of fuch Diftrefs fatisfied, -fhall be returned to fuch Overfeer, who in fuch Cafe fhall not be allowed the Sum fa levied in his Account,, Other Offences, II.
