VI. And to encourage all Perfons to ufe broad Wheels, in order to preferve all the Highways of this with broad Kingdom in good Repair ; Be it further enacted, That from and immediately after the paffin',' of this Act, drawn wkhaiTy it Aiall and maybe lawful for any Waggon or other four AVheel Carriage, having the Fellies of the Wheels Number of thereof of the Breadth or Gage of nine Inches, or upwards, to travel, pafs or be driven on any Highway Hoifcsnotex- within Great Britain, with any Number of Horfesi/or Beafts of Draught not exceeding eight ; and for any ceedingS; Cart or Other two Wheel Carriage, having the like Wheels, with any Number of Horfes cr Beafts of wn'^nn%f" Draught not exceeding five, without being fubjeft to any Penalties or Forfeitures for caufmgthe fame to ber not^exceed- travel, pafs or be driven by a greaterNumber of Horfes or Beafts of Draught than are now allowed' by Law; ing 5. any Thing contained in any Statute to the contrary notwithftanding. ■ ' VII. And whereas in and by feveral A(Ss of Parliament made and paffed for amending and repairing ' ' particular Highways and Roads within this Kingdom, feveral high and extraordinary Tolls and Duties are ' granted and direcSted to be levied and paid for Waggons and other Wheel Carriages drawn by more than a ' certain Number of Horfes or Beafts of Draught therein refpedlively mentioned, with an Intent in effect to ' prohibit the Paffage of fuch Carriages, and thereby the better to preferve the faid Roads :' Now it is here- Tru flees for the by further enafted. That it ftiall and'may be lawful to and for theTruftees appointed or to be appointed in Roads to leffcn or by virtue of any Adi of Parliament now in force, or now depending in Parliament refpecti-ely, for re- the extraordma- pairing and amending fuch particular Highways or Roads as aforefaid, or any nine or more of fuch Truftecs "^L^'wlth^^"^' refpeitively vvithin their refpedlive Diftrids; and they are hereby authorized and required to mitigate, leffen brra" Wheels and reduce the faid high and extraordinary Tolls and Duties for or in refpeft of iuch Waggons or other drawn by more Wheel Carriages only, having Wheels of the Breadth or Gage herein before prefcribed, in fuch manner as than a certain j^q greater Toll or Duty be demanded or taken for the fame than is provided and directed by the faid Acts HotTet*-"^ "^ refpeftively to be paid and taken for Waggons and other four Wheel Carriages drawn by five or four Horfes "'"' or Beafts of Draught ; and the faid Truftees within their feveral Diftrifts, or any nine or more of them refpedtively, are hereby authorized and required to give Diredions in Writing to the feveral Collectors within fuch their refpedive Diftriits, to take and receive fuch Tolls or Duties, and no other ; any Law or Statute to the contrary notwithftanding. Vin. And for the facilitating and more fpeedy accomplifhing and effefting the good Ends and Purpofes intended by this prefent A6t, it is hereby further enafted by the Authority aforefaid. That the leveral Truftees for the Truftees appointed by any A£t or A£ts of Parliament for the furveying, ordering, amending and keeping in Roads to meet, Repair the feveral Turnpike Roads of this Kingdom, or any five or more of them refpectively, fhall and and to order the "'^Y' ^^^ ""^Y ^""^ hereby authorized and required to meet from Time to Time, as there fliall be Occafion, Surveyors to at fome convenient Place within their refpeitive Diftrifts, fomeTime on or before the twenty-ninth Day caufcallthe of September one thoufend feven hundred and fifty-four, and to caufe Notice of fuch Meetings refpeitively vRiits, &c. to be J.Q jjg afHxed in Writing on the feveral Toll-gates within their faid feveral Diftricts at leaft ten Days before Poads'^to'bV^'^ fuch Meeting : And the faid Truftees refpeaively, or any five or rr.ore of them at fuch their Meetings, are widened where hereby authorized and required, by Writing under their Hands, to order and dire£t the Surveyor or Sur- jiccefliry, on or veyors of the faid Turnpike Roads refpedtively to caufe all the Rutts and Wheel Tracks in the fad Roads before 29 Sept. to be beat down, thrown in and levelled ; and the faid Roads to be widened where it fhall be neceffary, on ■'75+- or before the twenty-ninth Day oi September one thoufand feven hundred and fift3'-four. Charges to be IX. And it is hereby enafted and declared. That the Charges and Expences of fuch Work fo to be paid out of the ordered and direfted, fliall be paid and defrayed out of the Tolls and Duties arifing or to be raifed by virtue ■'^"^' or upon the Credit of the faid feveral A£ls made for repairing the faid Roads refpedtively. Surveyors to X. Arid it is hereby further enadted.
