WHEREAS it hath been found that the Ufe of Broad Wheels does very much contribute to the Improvement and Prefervation of the Turnpike Roads oi' that Part of Grr<^t Britain called Eng- Icind, and ufing heavy Carriages with Narrow Wheels, is very ruinous and deftruffive to the fame j For Remedy whereof,' Be it enadted by the King's moft Excellent Majefty, by and with the Advice and Tmrtees for Confent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this prefent Parliament afiembled. Turnpikes to and' by the Authority of the fame, That during the Time of feven Years, to be computed from the '^^'^'f°|'7 ^'""> twenty-fourth Day of June one thoufand feven hundred and fifty-eight, the Truftees appointed or to be ""^^ ^^^ ^"^^[^^ appointed by virtue or under the Authority of any A6t of Parliament made, or to be made, for making, for Wagg.nsand repairing or amending Turnpike Roads, or fuch Perfon or Perfons as are or fhall be authorifed by them, Carts, halving the fhall and may, and they are hereby required to demand and take for every Waggon, Wain, Cart or Car- f^^'^^s °^ ^^■^'"^ riage, having the Fellies of the Wheels thereof of lefs Breadth or Gage than nine Inches from Side to B^g^j!i°ha^* Side, at the leaft, at the Bottom or Sole thereof, or for the Horfes or Beafts of Draught drav.'ing the g^nches. fame, one Half more than the Tolls or Duties which are or (hall be payable for the fame refpectively, by any A6i or A6ls of Parliament made, or to be made, for making, amending or repairing 'Furnpike' Roads, before any fuch Waggon, Wain, Cart or Carriage refpe6i:ively, fliall be permitted to pafs through any Turnpike Gate or Gates, Bar or Bars, where Tolls fliall be payable by virtue of any of the faid Adfs.
