  • cife, it was enabled. That it fliould be lawful to and for the Gaugers or Officers of the Excife at
  • any Time or Times to take a Sample or Samples (not exceeding one Quart in the Whole) out

' of each of the Calks, or other Package, containing fuch Foreign Spirituous Liquors, paying for .* fuch Sample or Samples of Liquors after the Rate of fixteen Shillings per Gallon : And whereas ' the taking fo great a Quantity as a Quart out of each of the faid Cafics or other Package is unne- ' ceflary, and the paying for the fame at the before mentioned Rate will be detrimental to the Re- ' venue : And whereas till of late the Importers or Proprietors of fuch Foreign Spirituous Liquors, ' or their Factors or Agents, were permitted to take a Sample out of each Cufk or other Package, ' and to land fuch Sample without paying any Duty for the fame, by Means whereof they were ' enabled to, and did for the moft part, fell fuch Foreign Spirituous Liquors v^hilft on Shipboard: ' And whereas for fome Time laft paft fuch Permiffion hath in many Inftances been refufed, which
