The Kings molt excellent Majefty, by and with the confent and advice of the -Lords Spiritual and B^lfs^rohibit- Temporal, and Commons in this prefent Parliament affembled, doth therefore ordain and enact, and be e d to be print- " it ordained and emcted by the authority aforefaid, That no perfon or perfons whatfoever (hall prefume ed > published or to Print, or caufe to be Printed, either within this Realm of England, or any other his Majefties Domi- nions, or in the Parts beyond the Seas, any Heretical, Seditious, Schifmatical or offenfive Books or Pamphlets, wherein any Doctrine or Opinion (hall be afferted or maintained, which is contrary to the Chrirtian Faith, or the Doctrine or Difcipline of the Church of England, or which fhall or may tend, or be to the fcandal of Religion, or the Church, or the Government or Governors of the Church, State or Common-wealth, or of any Corporation or particular perfon or perfons whatfo- ever ; nor fhall Import, Publifli, Sell or Difperfe any fuch Book or Books, or Pamphlets, nor (hall caufe or procure any fuch to be publiihed or put to fale, or to be Bound, Stitched, or Sewed together. III. And be it further ordained and enacted by the Authority aforefaid, That no private perfon or Entry of Prinr- perfons whatfoever (hall at any time hereafter Print or caufe to be Printed any Book, or Pamphlet what- "" ^°H s J™i% foever, unlefs the fame Book and Pamphlet, together with all and every the Titles, Epiftles, Prefaces, the eompany°of Proems, Preambles, Introductions, Tables, Dedications, and other matters and things thereunto an- Stationers Lon- nexed, be firft Entred in the Book of the Regilter of the Company of Stationers of London, Except doB •' Acts of Parliament, Proclamations, and fuch other Books and Papers as fhall be appointed to be Print- ed by virtue of any Warrant under the Kings Majefties Sign-Manual, or under the Hand of one or both of his Majefties Principal Secretaries of State ; and unlefs the fame Book and Pamphlet, and alio all and every the faid Titles, Epiftles, Prefaces, Proems, Preambles, Introductions, Tables, Dedica- tions, and other matters and things whatfoever thereunto annexed, or therewith to be Imprinted, (hall- be firft lawfully Licenfed and Authorized to be Printed by fuch Perfon and Perfons only as (hall be con- ftituted and appointed to Licenfe the fame, according to the Direction and true meaning of this prefent Act herein after expreffed, and by no other ; (that is to fay) That all Books concerning the Common- who m j»g Laws of this Realm, (hall be Printed by the fpecial allowance of the Lord-Chancellor, or Lord-Keeper eenfeficqiss of the Great- Seal of England for the time being, the Lords Chief-Juftices, and Lord Chief-Baron for concerning the the time being, or one or more of them, or by their, or one or more of their appointments; And that t °c^ n p°"nt<:d WS all Books of Hiftory concerning the State of this Realm, or other Books concerning any Affairs of „ State, fhall be Licenfed by the Principal Secretaries of State for the time being, or' one of them, or V y° ^d Afintil by their, or one of their appointments ; And that all Books to be Imprinted concerning Heraldry, of'state. Titles of Honour, and Arms, or otherwife concerning the Office of Earl-Marfhal, (hall be Licenfed by concerning the Earl-Marlhal for the time being, or by his appointment, or in cafe there (hall not then be an Earl- Heraldry. Marfha), fhall be Licenfed by the three Kings of Arms, Garter, Clarencieux and Norroy, or any two of . them, whereof Garter Princpal King of Arms to be one ; And that all other Books to be Im- fick'pruiofo'" printed or Reprinted, whether of Divinity, Phyfick, Philofophy, or whatfoever other Science or Art, phy' cr other dial] be firft Licenfed and allowed by the Lord Archbifhop of Canterbury, and Lord Bifhop of London Science, for the time b'eirig, or one of them, or by their or one of their Appointments, or by either of the Chan- cellors, or Vice-Chancellors of either of the Univeriities of this Realm for the time being ; Provided al- ways, that the faid Chancellors, or Vice-Chancellors of either of the faid Univerfities fha.l only Licenfe fuch Books as are to be Imprinted or Reprinted within the Limits of the faid Univerfities refpectively, but not in London or elfewhere, not medling either with Books of Common-Laws, or matters of State Books Belong- or Government, nor any Book or Books, the right of Printing whereof doth folely and proper- j^pe°/ons' 1CB " 3y belong to any particular Perfon or Perfons, without his or their Confent firft obtained in that behalf. IV. And be It enacted by the Authority aforefaid, That every perfon and perfons who by virtue of £ ver y Licenfer this prefent Act are, or fhall be appointed, or authorifed to Licenfe the Imprinting of Books, or Reprint;- bitten ci* • ? ing thereof with any Additions or Amendments, as aforefaid, fhall have one written Copy of the fame the Book u- Book or Books which fhallbe fo Licenfed to be Imprinted or Reprimed with the Titles, Epiftles, Pre- cenfed,. faces, Tables, Dedications, and all other things whatfoever thereunto annexed ; which faid Copy (hall be delivered by fuch Licencer or Licencers to the Printer or Owner for the Imprinting thereof, and. fhall be folely and intirely returned by fuch Printer or Owner after the Imprinting thereof, unto fuch Licencer or Licencers, to be kept in the publick Regiftries of the faid Lord Archbiihop, or Lord Bilhop ere Earl-Marftial, or the faid Kings of Arms, or one of them, of all fuch Books as fhall be-Licenfed by them refpectively ; And if fuch Book fo to be Licenfed (ball be an Englijh-Book, or of the EngUfi- EngliftuBooJw Tongue, there (hall be two written Copies thereof delivered to the Licencer or Licencers (if he or they ^^? hthi- (hall fo require) one Copy whereof fo Licenfed fhall be delivered back to the faid Printer or Owner, and the other Copy (hall be referved and kept as is aforefaid, to the end fuch Licencer or Licencers may be fecured, that the Copy fo Licenfed- (hall not be altered without his or their privity;. And upon the faid Copy Licenfed to be Imprinted, he or they who (hall fo Licence the fame, fhall Teftifie under his or their Hand or Hands, That there is not any thing in the fame contained that is contrary to the the Chriftian Faith, or the Doctrine or Difcipline of the Church of England, or againft the. State or Government of this Realm, or contrary to good Life, or good Manners, or otherwife as the nature and fubject of the Work fhall require ■> Which Licence or Approbation fhall be printed in the begin- ning
