Mr. William Smith, of Virginia, offered a resolution that a committee of three be appointed to act in conjunction with that of the Senate, to wait upon the President and inform him of the organization of the House.
The resolution was adopted, and Messrs. Garnett, of Virginia; Chilton, of Alabama, and Wright, of Georgia, were appointed to constitute said committee on the part of the House.
Mr. Batson, of Arkansas, presented a memorial from Gibson P. Johnson in reference to his election as member of the Confederate Congress. Laid on the table for the present.
The House then adjourned.
SENATE
The Senate was called to order at 12 o'clock M. Prayer by Bishop Early, of the Methodist Church. The journal of yesterday was read.
Mr. [Clement C] Clay, of Alabama; Mr. [T. J.] Semmes, of Louisiana, and Mr. [James] Phelan, of Mississippi, appeared in their seats. The oath to support the Constitution was administered to each of them.
Appointment of Clerks, Etc.
On motion of Mr. Orr, of South Carolina, the Secretary was authorized to appoint an Assistant Secretary, a Journal Clerk, and a Recording Clerk.
On motion of Mr. Hill, of Georgia, the President was authorized to appoint a suitable page. (Master Wm. H. Talman was appointed.)
