No compilations of the troops engaged or of the losses sus- tained in the various Iiidian wars have ever been made. The struggles having been conducted by the small regular army, usually attracted no attention unless attended with such trage- dies as the Dade or Custer massacres. The strength of the regular army and proportion of officers to enlisted men at various periods are shown in the following table :
