120 TABULATION OF FOLKTALES.

Special Points noted by the Editor of the above — A large proportion of

Kaffir tales have a similar termination with many English ones ; the heroine gets married to a prince. These show that a desire for worldly rank is as great in the one people as the other. When a Kaffir girl arrives at a mar- riageable age, she stays with a female friend, and villagers are invited to attend the Ntonjane. An ox is slaughtered by her father's order, and girls are invited to take part in a dance; after they have finished men and women dance.

Remarks by the Tabulator.— iv?z.
