Terentius Varro, Tullio, of which a fragment remains.
C. Cassius Varus.
                                  The beginning of the war of Spartacus.

B.C. 72. Coss., L. Æt. 34. L. Lucullus conducting the
Gellius Poplicola, Mithradatic war. The war of Spartacus
Cn. Cornelius Lentulus in Italy still continues, and both consuls
Clodianus. suffer defeat.

B.C. 71. Coss., Cn. Æt. 35. Spartacus defeated and killed
Aufidius Orestes, by Crassus. Pompey returns from Spain
P. Cornelius Lentulus after finishing the war with Sertorius,
Sura. defeats the remnants of the rebels of
                                  Spartacus, and celebrates a triumph.

                                  Cicero perhaps delivered the speech
                                  pro Aulo Cæcina this year. He says
                                  that he was working hard during these
                                  three years (pro Planc. §§ 65-66), but we
                                  have no record of what he was doing.

B.C. 70. Coss., Cn. Æt. 36. Cicero elected ædile.
Pompeius Magnus, He undertakes the prosecution of
M. Licinius Verres, delivers Divinatio in Quintum
Crassus Dives. Cæcilium and in Verrem actio prima. The
                                  five books of the Actio secunda in Verrem
                                  were not delivered, but were written and
                                  published.

                                  Birth of Vergil.

B.C. 69. Q. Hortensius, Æt. 37. The ædileship. He says that
Q. Cæcilius he was economical in the three games
Metellus Criticus. which he gave as ædile. The speech pro
                                  Fonteio probably belongs to this year.

                                  Cicero purchases a villa at Tusculum.
