Gervaſe Markham.

THis Author was Son to Robert Markham, of Cotham in Nottinghamſhire, Eſq; was born in the Reign of Queen Elizabeth, and liv’d to have a Captain’s Command in the Civil war, under King Charles the Firſt. He writ curious Pieces of Husbandry, Horſemanſhip, and War, and one Play, in which one Sampſon aſſiſted, intituled,

Herod and Antipater, a Tragedy, 4 to. 1622. Plot from Joſephus Hiſt. Jews, Book 14, 15, &c. Spondanus, Baronii Ann. Salian Torniel, &c.

Chriſtopher Marlow.

A Famous Poet of Queen Elizabeth and King James’s Time, contemporary with the immortal Shakeſpear, was Fellow-Actor with Heywood, and others, he writ a Poem called, Hero and Leander, much commended, as alſo theſe seven Plays following:

Dr. Fauſtus his tragical Hiſtory, 4 to. 1661, being the laſt Edition, printed with the Addition of many Scenes. Plot, Camerarii Opera Subſc. Cent. 1. Cap. 70. Wierus de Præftig. Dæmonum, Lib. 2. Cap. 4. Lonicerus, &c.

Dido, Queen of Carthage, a Tragedy, 4 to. 1594. In this he was joined by Naſh. Plot from Virgil’s Æneids, Book 4.

Edward the Second, a Tragedy, 4 to. 1594. Plot from Thomas de la More, Sir Francis Hubert, and other Engliſh Hiſtorians of that Time.

Jew of Malta, a Tragi-Comedy, 4 to. 1633. Acted by her Majeſty’s Servants at the Cock-pit, and at Whitehall, before the King and Queen. A Play of great Eſteem in thoſe Days.

Luſt’s Dominion; or, The Laſcivious Queen, a Tragedy 8 vo. 1661. This Play has been acted of late Years, under the Title of Abdelazar; or, The Moor’s Revenge: with few Alterations, by Mrs. Behn.

Maſſacre at Paris, with the Death of the Duke of Guiſe, a Tragedy, 8 vo. Acted by the Lord Admiral’s Servants. Is not divided into Acts. Plot from Davila, Thuanus, Dupleix, and Mezeray, in the Reigns of Char. IX. and Hen. III. of France.

Tamberlain the Great; or, The Scythian Shepherd, in Two Parts, a Tragedy, 8 vo. 1593. Acted alſo by the Lord Admiral’s Servants. Plot, Jean du Bec, Laonicus, Chalcocondilas, Pet. Bizarus, Knolles Hiſt. Turks, L’Hiſtoire de Tamerlain, 8 vo. and his Life in Engliſh, 8 vo.
