Every infidel, and namely Heretikes, are judged already.18. Is judged already.) He that beleeveth in Christ with faith which worketh by charitie (as the Apostle speaketh)Gal. 5, 6. shal not be condemned at the later day nor at the houre of his death: but the Infidel, be he Jew, Pagan, or Heretike, is already (if he die in his incredulitie) by his owne profession and sentence condemned, and shal not come to judgement either particular or general, to be discussed according to his workes of mercie done or omitted. In which sense S. Paul saithTit. 3, 11. that the obstinate Heretike is condemned by his owne judgement, preventing in himself, of his owne free wil, the sentence both of Christ and of the Church.

The excellencie of Christs power and graces.31. He that commeth from above.) As though he should say: No marvel that men resort to Christ so fast and make lesse account of me. For, his baptisme and his preaching and his Person are al from Heaven immediatly. He bringeth al from the very bosome, mouth, and substance of God his Father. Whatsoever is in me, is but a litle drop of his grace. His spirit and graces are above al measures or mens gifts, even according to his Manhood: and al power temporal and spiritual, the Kingdom and the Priesthood, and al soveraigntie in Heaven and earth are bostowed upon him as he is man also.


Chap. IV.

Leaving Jewrie because of the Pharisees, in the way to Galilee he talketh with a Samaritane woman, telling her that he wil give water of everlasting life, 16. shewing himself to know mens secrets, 19. preferring the Jewes religion before the Samaritanes, but ours (the Christian Catholike religion) before them both, 25. and uttering unto her that he is Christ. 28. Which by her testimonie and his preaching very many Samaritanes do beleeve: he in the meane time foretelling his Disciples, of the harvest he wil send them into. 45. The Galileans also receive him, where againe he worketh his second miracle.

WHEN Jesus therfore understood that the Pharisees heard that Jesus maketh more Disciples, and baptizeth, then John, 2(howbeit [1] Jesus did not baptize, but his Disciples) 3he left Jewrie, and went againe into Galilee. 4And he had of necessitie to passe through Samaria. The Ghospel upon Friday in the 3. weeke in Lent.5He commeth therfore into a citie of Samaria which is called Sichar; Gen. 48, 22.* beside the Manour that Jacob gave to Joseph his sonne. 6And there was there the fountaine of Jacob. Jesus therfore wearied of his journey, sate so upon the fountaine. It was about the sixt houre.

7There commeth [2] a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith to her: Give me to drinke. 8For his Disciples were gone into the citie, to buie meates. 9Therfore that Samaritane woman saith to him: How doest thou being a Jewe, aske of me to drinke, which am a Samaritane woman? For the Jewes [3] doe not communicate with the Samaritanes. 10Jesus answered, and said to her: If thou didst know the guift of God, and who he is that saith unto thee, Give me to drinke: thou perhaps wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee the [4] living water. 11The woman saith to him: Sir, neither hast thou wherein to draw, and the well is deep; whence hast thou living water? 12art thou greater then our Father Jacob, who gave us the wel, and himself dranke of it, and his children, and his cattel? 13Jesus answered,

  1. He did not baptize ordinarily: yet that he baptized his Apostles, S. Aug. thinketh it very probable, ep. 108.
  2. This woman is a figure of the Church, not yet justified, but now to be justified. Aug. tract. 15. in Joan.
  3. There were many other causes why the faithful Jewes could not abide the Samaritans, but their precise abstaning from their companie and conversation, was their Schismatical Temple and Service in mount Garizim.
  4. He speaketh of his baptizing in the Holy Ghost. see Io. c. 7, 39.
