(b) EFFECTIVE DATE.—The amendments made by subsection (a) shall take effect on the first day of the fourth calendar month following the month in which this Act is enacted and shall apply only with respect to diving duty performed on or after that date. SEC. 625. SELECTIVE RENLISTMENT BONUSES (a) IN GENERAL.—Paragraph (1) of section 308(b) of title 37, United States Code, is amended to read as follows: "(1) Bonus payments authorized under this section may be paid in either a lump sum or in installments. If the bonus is paid in installments, the initial payment shall be not less than 50 percent of the total bonus amount.'. 37 USC 308 note. EXTENSION OF ENLISTMENT AND RENLISTMENT BONUS AUTHORITIES (a)

FIVE-YEAR EXTENSION OF ACTIVE-DUTY BONUSES.—Sections

308(g), 308a(c), and 308ftc) of title 37, United States Code, are amended by striking out "September 30, 1987" and inserting in lieu thereof "September 30, 1992 (b) THREE-YEAR EXTENSION OF RESERVE COMPONENT BONUSES.—

Sections 308b(g), 308c(f), 308e(e), 308g(h), 308h(g), and 308i(i) of such t?tle are amended by striking out "September 30, 1987" and inserting in lieu thereof "September 30, 1990". (c) COVERAGE OF PERIOD OF LAPSED AUTHORITY.—(1) The Secretary concerned, in the case of any person who during the period beginning on October 1, 1987, and ending on the date of the enactment of this Act would have qualified for an agreement with the Secretary described in paragraph (2) but for the fact that the authority for the payment of bonuses provided by that section had lapsed, shall pay to that person a bonus under the terms of the appropriate section speci^ed in that paragraph (and related regulations) as in effect on September 30, 1987. (2) An agreement referred to in paragraph (1) is an agreement with the Secretary for the payment of a bonus under section 308, 308a, 308b, 308c, 308e, 308f, 308g, 308h, or 308i of title 37, United States Code. . itj/^t ro: /; PART D—MISCELLANEOUS SEC. 631.
