"(2) Any nonprofit organization that coordinates the provision of services described in paragraph (1).". (2) The table of sections at the beginning of such chapter is amended by inserting after the item relating to section 1143 the following new item: 1143a. Encouragement of postseparation public and community service: Department of Defense.". (b) DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS RESPONSIBILITIES.—Section 1142(b)(4) of title 10, United States Code, is amended by inserting before the period at the end the following: ", including the public and community service jobs program carried out under section 1143a of this title". (c) PRESEPARATION ASSISTANCE BY THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR.— Section 1144(b) of such title is amended by adding at the end the following new paragraph: "(8) Provide information regarding the public and community service jobs program carried out under section 1143a of this title.". SEC. 4463. PROGRAM OF EDUCATIONAL LEAVE RELATING TO CONTINUING PUBLIC AND COMMUNITY SERVICE. (a) PROGRAM. —Under regulations prescribed by the Secretary of Defense after consultation with the Secretary of Transportation and subject to subsections (b) and (c), the Secretary concerned may grant to an eligible member of the Armed Forces a leave of absence for a period not to exceed one year for the purpose of permitting the member to pursue a program of education or training (including an intemsnip) for the development of skills that are relevant to the performance of public and community service. A program of education or training referred to in the preceding sentence includes any such program that is ofiTered by the Department of Defense or by any civilian educational or training institution. (b) ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT.—(1) A member may not be granted a leave of absence under this section luiless the member agrees in writing— (A) diligently to pursue employment in public service and community service organizations upon the separation of the member from active duty in the Armed Forces; and (B) to serve in the Ready Reserve of an armed force, upon such separation, for a period of 4 months for each month of the period of the leave of absence. (2)(A) A member may not be granted a leave of absence under this section until the member has completed any period of extension of enlistment or reenlistment, or any period of obligated active duty service, that the member has incurred under section 708 of title 10, United States Code. (B) The Secretary concerned may waive the limitation in subparagraph (A) for a member who enters into an agreement with the Secretary for the member to serve in the Ready Reserve
