SEC.1824 . HIG H -L E V EL PO SI T IO N S AU THO R I Z E D OR RE Q UIRED TO B EHELDB Y RESERVE CO M PONENT GENERAL OR F LAG OFFICERS. (a) SE NS EO F CON G RESS.— I t is the sense of Congress that, whenever officers of the Armed Forces are considered for promotion to the grade of lieutenant general, or vice admiral in the case of the Navy, on the active duty list, officers in the reserve compo- nents of the Armed Forces who are eligible for promotion to such grade should be considered for promotion to such grade. (b) N A T I ONA L G U AR DO FFI C ER AS DEPUT Y CO M MANDER OF U NITED STATES NORT H ERN COMMAND.—Section 1 64 (e) of title 10, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following new paragraph

‘(4) At least one deputy commander of the combatant command the geographic area of responsibility of which includes the United States shall be a q ualified officer of the National Guard who is eligible for promotion to the grade of O –9 , unless a National Guard officer is serving as commander of that combatant command. ’ ’. (c) INCREASE IN NUM B ER OF UNIFIED AND SPECIFIED COMBAT- ANT COMMAND POSITIONS FOR RESER V E COMPONENT OFFICERS.— Section 5 26(b)(2)(A) of such title is amended by striking ‘‘10 general and flag officer positions on the staffs of the commanders of’’ and inserting ‘‘15 general and flag officer positions in’’. SEC. 182 5 . RETIREMENT AGE AND YEARS OF SERVICE LIMITATIONS ON CERTAIN RESERVE GENERAL AND FLAG OFFICERS. (a) RETIREMENT FOR AGE.— (1) INCLUSION OF RESERVE GENERALS AND ADMIRALS.—Sec- tion 14511 of title 10, United States Code, is amended to read as follows: ‘ ‘ §145 11 .Separ a tion ata g e 6 4
o f fi c er s in gra d eof m a j or genera l or rear admiral and a b o v e ‘‘(a) SEPARATION RE Q UIRED.—Unless retired, transferred to the Retired Reserve, or discharged at an earlier date, each reserve officer of the Army, Air Force, or Marine Corps in the grade of ma j or general or above and each reserve officer of the Navy in the grade of rear admiral or above shall be separated in accordance with section 14515 of this title on the last day of the month in which the officer becomes 64 years of age. ‘‘(b) EX CEPTION FOR OFFICERS SERVING IN O–9 AND O–10 POSI- TIONS.— T he retirement of a reserve officer of the Army, Air Force, or Marine Corps in the grade of lieutenant general or general, 10USC 1 64note.
