T he strength and conviction of all mothers — including those who work inside and outside the home—are ins p iring. They de - serve our deepest respect, admiration, and appreciation. A mother ’ s love is a cherished blessing, for it is selfless, unconditional, and true. This M other’s D ay, let us honor our mothers who continue to inspire us, and remember those whose loving spirits sustain us still. The C ongress, by a joint resolution approved May 8 , 19 1 4(3 8 S tat. 7 7 0) , has designated the second Sunday in May each year as ‘ ‘Mother’s Day’’ and re q uested the P resident to call for its appropriate observance. During National Transportation Week and on National Defense Transportation Day, we underscore the importance of the transportation system to our Nation’s economy and security. We also honor the dedicated professionals who build, maintain, and oper- ate our transportation infrastructure. From rural roads to state-of-the-art intermodal facilities, transportation infrastructure is crucial to economic growth. G oods and services flow constantly across land, water, and sky, and our most efficient modes of travel save businesses and consumers money, and can reduce im- pacts on our environment. To compete in the 21st century global econ- omy, the United States must have an advanced transportation system. Securing America’s energy future and maintaining our national defense also require a robust transportation system.
