Ch. 421. 1899. 1025 allowances shall be the same as those received by the last General of the United States Army; clerks to commandauts of yards and stations; clerlgs to paymasters at yards and stations; general storekeepers, receivin g ships and other vessels; extra pay to men reenlistin g under honorable discharge; interest on deposits by men; pay of petty officers, seamen, landsmen, and apprentice boys, including men in the engineers force and for the Coast Survey Service and Fish Commission, seventeen thousand nve hundred men and two thousand five hundred apprentices under training at training stations and on board training ships, and for men detailed for duty with naval militia at the pay prescribed by law, and for men to be enlisted to fill vacancies, this last item to be immediately available, thirteen million nve hundred thousand one hundred and seventy-one dollars. The Secretary of the Navy is hereby authorized to pay to such oiii- P¤y¤i¤¤¢ w www cers as were appointed for temporary service in the Navy during the {§§’§$}f{,§;§'b§$§}§ late war with Spain, and who entered upon the performance of duty dm of ¢°*¤¤i¤¤*•>¤· prior to the date on which they accepted their commissions and executed oaths of office, the pay of their grades for the interval during which they were so employed, such payments to be made from the appropriation “Pay of the N avy." PAY, MISCELLANEOUS. For commissions and interest; transportation of funds; exchange; rsy,ma¤ee11¤¤em. mileage to officers while traveling under orders in the United States, and for actual personal expenses of officers while traveling abroad under orders, and for traveling expenses of apothecaries, yeomen, and civilian employees, and for actual and necessary traveling expenses of naval cadets while proceeding from their homes to the Naval Academy for examination and appointment as cadets; for rent and furniture of buildings and offices not in navy-yards; expenses of courts-martial, prisoners and prisons, and courts of inquiry, boards of inspection, examining boards, with clerks’ and witnesses’ fees, and traveling expenses and costs; stationery and recording; expenses of purchasing·paymasters’ offices of the various cities, including clerks, furniture, fuel, stationery, and incidental expenses; newspapers and advertising; foreign postage; telegraphing, foreign and domestic; telephones; copying; care of library, including the purchase of books, photographs, prints, manuscripts, and periodicals; ferriage, tolls, and express fees; costs of suits; commissions, warrants, diplomas, and discharges; relief of vessels in distress; canal tolls and pilotage; recovery of valuables from shipwrecks; quarantine expenses; reports; professional investigation; cost of special instruction, at home or abroad; in maintenance of students and attaches and information from abroad, and the collection and classification thereof, and other necessary and incidental expenses, five hundred thousand dollars.
