That hereafter every person who directly or indirectl takes, receives, m§,‘{Q,;’h“g°,§’c‘Q‘ Q}; or agrees to receive any money, property, or other valuable considera- ¤10¤¢Y.¤¥¢· tion whatever from any person for giving, procuring, or aiding to give or procure any office, place, or promotion in office from the Commissioners of the District of Colmnbia, or from any officer under them, and every person who, directly or indirectly, offers to give, or gives any money, property, or other valuable consideration whatever for the procuring or ai ing to procure any such office, place, or promotion in office shall he deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and on conviction thereof in the olice court shall be punished by a fine not exceeding one thousand d)ollars or im risonment in the jail for not more than twelve months, or both, in tile discretion of the court.
