[H' R` m°°°‘] ‘ [Public, No. 204.] Be it enacted by the Senate and House 0_fRepresentatéces 0 f the United _ States ofA.meriea in Ozmgresa assembled, That the assent of the United (§h‘}‘}£'§{gSguY,g_ States of America is hereby given to the Charleston and Summerville g;vi¤¤ R¤{;,w¤¥ Railway Company, a corporation incorporated by the laws of the State nmpdihhiigtbu. m' of South Carolina, its successors and assigns, and such other rsons , as may be isociated with it, to construct and maintain two over the Ashley River, in the counties of Charleston and Dorchester, in the State aforesaid, one of said bridges to extend from a site on the east bank of the Ashley River at or near the northern limits of the city of Charleston across to the opposite shore, the other of said bridges to extend from the west to the east bank of the Ashley River at a point relatively near and reasonably distant from what is now known as Bacon’s bridge. Sec. 2. That the bridges shall be so constructed, by draw span or 2¤¤b¤¢r¤¤¤e<i ¤¤vi— otherwise, that a free and unobstructed passage may be secure to all °° °°' vessels and other water craft navigating said river at said point; that any bridges constructed under this Act shall be built and located under and subject to such regulations for the securit of the navi tion of said river as the Chief of Engineers and the Secretary] of Var shall prescribe, and to secure that object the said company s all submit to seemnyoe nxt to the Chief of Engineers and the Secretary of War, for their examine.- °‘”'°°°° °°’ ° ' tion and approval, the design and drawings of the bridges, piers, and approaches, and a map of the location, giving for the space of at least one mile above and one mile below the proposed location the topo raphy of the banks of the river, the shore lines at high water and Tow water, and the direction and strength of the currents at all sta es, and the soundings, accurately showing the bed of the stream, and the location of other bridge or bridges, wharves, landings, o1· ferries, and shall furnish such other information as shall be required for a full and satisfactory understanding of the subject; and until Chsnzsssaid plan and location of the bridges are approved by the Chief of Engineers and the Secretary of War the bridges shal not be commenced or built, and after such approval b the Chief of Engineers and the Secretary of War the approved mplyans and designs for the bridges shall not be dex iated from or add to, either during the construction or after the completion of the bridges, until the proposed change shall have been submitted to the Chie of Engineers and the Secretary of 'War and received their approval; and the said bridges shall be at all times so kept and managed as to offer reasonable and proper means for the passage of vessels navigating said river at said point through or under said bridges; and if said bridges be built with vor. xxxm, rr 1-66
