Contingent expenses : For traveling expenses including steno- graphic reporting service outside of the District of Columbia not exceeding $2,500, by contract or otherwise ; materials, supplies, equip- ment, and services ; rent of buildings and equipment ; purchase and exchange of books, law books, books of reference, and periodicals, which may be paid for in advance, tabulating cards, typewriters, calculating machines, and other office appliances, including their development, repairs and maintenance, including motor-propelled passenger-carrying vehicles ; and miscellaneous items, $176,000, to- gether with $24,000 of the unexpended balance of the appropriation for this purpose for the fiscal year 1928 . HOUSING CORPORATION Salaries : For officers, clerks, and other employees in the District of Columbia necessary to collect and account for the receipts from the sal e of p ropert ies an d the receip ts from the o perati on of unsold properties of the United States Housing Corporation, the Bureau of Industrial Housing and Transportation, property commandeered by the United States through the Secretary of Labor, and to collect the amounts advanced to transportation facilities and others, $27,850, together with $3,400 of the unexpended balance of the appropriation for this purpose for the fiscal year 1928 : Provided, That no person shall be employed hereunder at a rate of compensation exceeding $5,000 per annum, and only one person may be employed at that rate.
