MILITARY SURVEYS AND MAPS ORDNANCE SERVICE For the current expenses of the Ordnance Department in connec- tion with purchasing, receiving, storing, and issuing ordnance and ordnance stores, comprising police and office duties, rents, tolls, fuel, light, water, and advertising, stationery, typewriting and add ing machines, including their exchange, and office furniture, tools, and instruments of service ; for incidental expenses of the ordnance serv- ice and those attending practical trials and tests of ordnance small arms, and other ordnance stores ; for publications for libraries of the Ordnance Dep artment, incl uding the ordn ance office ; s ubs cr ip - tions to periodicals, which may be paid for in advance ; and pay men t for mechanical labor in the office of the Chief of Ordnance ; and for maintenance, repair, and operation of motor-propelled or horse- drawn passenger-carrying vehicles, $1 ,010 ,430 : Provid ed, That the Ordnan ce Dep artmen t is hereby autho rized to em ploy, under its various appropriations, not exceeding four consulting engineers as the Secretary of War may deem necessary at rates of pay to be fixed by him not to exceed $50 a day for not exceeding fifty days each and necessary traveling expenses . MANUFACTURE OF ARMS For developing, manufacturing, repairing, procuring, and issuing arms at the national armories, $312,848 .
