FOREST RESEARCH For forest research in accordance with the provisions of sections 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, and 10 of the Act entitled "An Act to insure adequate supplies of timber and other forest products for the people of the United States, to promote the full use for timber growing and other purposes of forest lands in the United States, including farm wood lots and those abandoned areas not suitable for agricultural produc- tion, and to secure the correlation and the most economical conduct Fores t resea rch. IV, P. 175 . 1259 and appraisal of lands in effecting exchanges authorized by law and for the survey th er eof by metes and bounds or otherwise, by employees of the F orest Service, unde r the direction of the Com- missioner of the General Land Office ; and for the survey and plat- ting of certain lands, chiefly valuable for agriculture, now listed or to be listed within the national forests, under the Act of June 11, 1906 (U. S . C ., title 16, sees . 506-509), the Act of August 10, 1912 (V. S. C., title 16, sec. 506), and the Act of March 3, 1899 (U. S. C., title 16, sec . 488), as provided by the Act of March 4, 1913 (U. S. C., title 16, sec. 512), $58,980 . Sanitation and fire prevention : For the construction and mainte- nance of sanitary facilities and for fire-preventive mea sures on public camp grounds within the national forests when necessary for the protection of the public health or the prevention of forest fires, $67,000, of which $40,000 shall be i mmedi ately ava ilabl e .

Planting on national forests : For the establishment and mainte- ing, et c. nance of forest-tree nurseries, the collection or purchase of tree seed, cones, and nursery stock, and seeding and tree planting within national forests ; for additional protection, care, and improvement of the resulting plantations or young growth ; and for experiments and inve stig ati ons necessary for such seed ing and tre e pl anti ng, $250,000 . Reco nnai ssanc e, na tiona l for ests : For estimating and appraising timber and other resources on the national forests preliminary to disposal by sale or to the issue of occupancy permits, and for emer- gency expenses incident to their sale or use, $131,260 . Improvement of the national forests : For the constructio n and maint enanc e of road s, tr ails, brid ges, fire lane s, te lepho ne l ines, cabin s, fe nces , and othe r imp rovem ents nece ssary for the p rope r and economica l adminis tration, protection , and dev elopment of the national forests, $2,359,200, of which $494,200 shall be immediately avail able, and of w hich amoun t $15 0,00 0 is reser ved f or ex pend iture on the Angeles, Cleveland, Santa . Barbara, and San Bernardino National Forests in southern California : Provided , T hat su ch sum of $150, 000 shall not be expended unless an equ al amount is con- trib uted for such work by State, county, municipal, and/or other local interests, to be paid, in whole or in part, in advance of the per- formance of the work for which thi s appropriation pro vides : Pro- vided further, That where, in the opinion of the Secretary of Agri- cult ure, direc t pur chas e wil l be more econo mica l tha n con struc tion, tele phone line s, ca bins , fen ces, and o ther impr oveme nts m ay be pur- chased : Provided further, That not to exceed $120 ,000 may be expended for the construct ion and m aintenance of bound ary and range division fences, counting corrals, stock driveways and bridges, the development of stock watering places, and the era dication of poisonous plants on the national forests : Provided further, That not to exceed $1,000 of this appropriation may be used for the repair and maintenance of the dani at Cass Lake, Minnesota : Provided further, That not less than $1 .229,200 of this appropriation shall be available only for the construction and maintenance of roads and trails .
