LEG ISLATI VE REF ERENCE SERVIC E To enable the Librarian of Congress to employ competent persons to gather, classify, and make available, in translations, indexes, digests, compilations, and bulletins, and otherwise, data for or bear- ing upon legislation, and to render such data serviceable to Congress and committees and Members thereof, including not to exceed $5,700 for employees engaged on piecework and work by the day or hour at rates to be fixed by the Librarian, $66,662 . DISTRIBUTION OF CARD INDEXES For the distribution of card indexes and other publications of the Library , incl uding person al ser vices, freigh t char ges (n ot exc eeding $500), expressage, postage, traveling expenses connected with such distribution, expenses of attendance at meetings when incurred on the written authority and direction of the Librarian, and including not to exceed $52,650, for employees engaged in piecework and work by the day or hour and for extra special services of regular employees at rates to be fixed by the Librarian ; in all, $162,260 . TEMPORARY SERVICES For special and temporary service, including extra special services of regular employees, at rates to be fixed by the Librarian, $2,700 . INDEX TO STATE LEGISLATION To enable the Librarian of Congress to prepare an index to the legislation of the several States, together with a supplemental digest of the more i mporta nt leg islati on, as author ized a nd dir ected by the Act entitled "An Act providing for the preparation of a biennial index t o Stat e legi slatio n ", ap prov ed Febr uary 10, 192 7 (U .S .C., Supp . VI, title 2, sets . 164, 165), including personal and other services within and wi thout the Di strict of Co lumbia, inclu ding n ot to exceed $2,500 for sp ecial and te mporar y serv ice at rates to be fixed by the Librarian, travel, necessary material and apparatus, and for printing and bin ding t he ind exes a nd dig ests o f State legis lation for official distribution only, and other printing and binding incident to the work of compi lation , stat ionery , and inciden tals, 36,420 , of whic h $6 ,7 00 shall be imm ediate ly ava ilable for p rinting and b inding . SUNDAY OPENING To enable the Library of Congress to be kept open for reference use on Sundays and on holidays within the discretion of the Libra- rian, including the extra services of employees and the services of additional employees under the Librarian, at rates to be fixed by the Librarian, $16,200 . UNION CATALOGUES To continue the development and maintenance of the Union Cata- logues, including personal services within and without the District of Columbia (and not to exceed $1,400 for special and temporary service, including extra sp ecial ser vices of regular e mployees, at rates to be f ixed b y the Librar ian), travel , neces sary m ateria l and appa- ratus, stationery, photostat supplies, and incidentals, $18,100 .
