[CHAP TER 212 .1 AN ACT Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States o f America in Congress assembled, That in commemo- ration of the three-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the first settlement on Long Island, New York, there shall be coined at a mint of the U nited St ates to be desig nated by the Dir ector of the Mint not to exceed one hundred thousand silver 50-cent pieces of standard size, weimht, and composition, and of a special appropri- ate single design to le fixed by the Director of the Mint, with the approval of the Secretary of the Treasury, but the United States shall not be subject to the expense of making the necessary dies and other preparations for this coinage . SEC . 2 . The coins herein authorized shall bear the date 1936, irre- spective of the year in which they are minted or issued, shall be legal tender in any pay ment to the amou nt of th eir face value, and sha ll be issued only upon the request of the chairman or secretary of the Long I sland Tercen tenar y Comm ittee upon payment by him of the par value of such coins, but not less than five thousand such coins shall be issued to him at any one time and no such coins shall be issued after the expiration of one year after the date of enactment of this Act . Such coins may be disposed of at par or at a premium by such committee and the net proceeds shall be used by it in defray- ing the expenses incidental and appropriate to the commemoration of such event . S EC . 3 . All laws now in fo rce relating to the subsid iary silver co ins of the United States and the coining or striking of the same, regu- lating an d guardi ng the p rocess o f coinag e, provi ding fo r the pu r- chase of material, and for the transportation, distribution, and redemption of coins, for the prevention of debasement or counter- fe iting, f or the s ecurity of the c oins, or for any other p urposes, whether such laws are penal or otherwise, shall, so far as applicable, apply to the coinage herein authorized . "SEC. 2 . The Board is hereby authorized to accept, receive, hold, and administer such gifts, bequests, or devises of property for the benefit of, or in connectio n with, the L ibrary, its co llections, or its service, as may be approved by the Board and by the Joint Com- mittee on the 'Library ."
