To provide the Public Printer with a working capital for the followin g purposes for the execution of printing, bi nding, litho- graphing, mapping, engraving, and other authorized work of the Gove rnment Printing Office for the various branc hes of the Gove rn- Public Printer, Dep- ment : For salaries of Public Printer and Deputy Public Printer ; uty, etc . for salaries, compe nsation, or wag es of all nece ssary officers and employees additional to those herein appropriated for, including employees necessary to handle waste paper and condemned material for sale ; to enable the Public Printer to comply with the provisions of law granting holidays and half holidays and Executive orders Leaves of absence, gr anting holida ys and half h oliday s with pay to emplo yees ; t o etc . enable the Public Printer to comply with the provisions of law gran ting annual lea ve to employees with pay, sai d pay to be at the rate for their regu lar positions a t the time the leave is grant ed ; rental of buildings and equipment, fuel, gas, heat, electric current, vehi cles . gas and electric fixtures ; bicycles, motor-propelled vehicles for the carriage of printing and printing supplies, and the maintenance, repair, and operation of the same to be used only for official pur- poses, including operation, repair , , and maintenance of motor-pro- pelled passenger-carrying vehicles, and the purchase or exchange of two such passenger vehicles (at a cost, includin g the allowance on any vehicle given in part payment therefor, of not to exceed $1,000 and $750, respectively), for official use of the officers of the Govern- ment Printing Office when in writing ordered by the Public Printer ; fr eight, expres sage, telegr aph an d tele phone s ervice , furn iture, type- writers, and carpets ; traveling expenses ; stationery, postage, and advertising ; directories, technical books, newspapers and magazines, and books of reference (not exceeding $500) ; adding and numbering machines, time stamps, and other machines of similar character ; Machinery, etc . rubber boots, coats, and gloves ; machinery (not exceeding $300,000) ; equipment, and for repairs to machinery, implements, and buildings, and for minor alterations to buildings ; necessary equipment, mainte- nance, and supplies for the emergency room for the use of all employees in the Government Printing Office who may be taken suddenly ill or receive injury while on duty ; other necessary con- tingent and miscellaneous items authorized by the Public Printer ; for expenses authorized in writing by the Joint Committee on Printing for the inspection of printing and binding equipment, mate- rial, and sup plie s an d Go vern ment pri ntin g pl ants in the Dist rict Indexes, Congres- of Columbia or elsewhere (not exceeding $1,000) ; for salaries and sional Record. expenses of preparing the semimonthly and session indexes of the Congressional Record under the direction of the Joint Committee on Printing (chief indexer at $3,480, one cataloguer at $3,180, two cataloguers at $2,460 each, and one cataloguer at 2,100)
