Repr esen tati on al - lowances . 46 Stat. 1209 . 22 U.S. C.°12. 75TH CONGRESS, 1ST SESSION-CH . 359-JUNE 16, 1937 Consular, and Foreign Service officers, and other employees of the Foreign Service, including Foreign Service inspectors, and under such regulations as the Secretary of State may prescribe, of their families and expenses of transportation of effects, in going to and returning from their posts, including not to exceed $110,000 for expenses incurred in connection with leaves of absence, and of the prepara tion and transp ortation of the remain s of tho se offi cers and said employees of the Foreign Service, who have died or may die abroad or in trangit while in the discharge of their official d uties . to their former homes in this country or to a place not more distant for interment and for the ordinary expenses of such interment, and also for payment under the provisions of section 1 749 of the Revised Statutes (U . S . C ., title 22, sec . 130) of allowances to the widows or heirs at law of Dipl omatic, Consul ar, and Foreign Service officers of the United States dying in foreign countries in the dis- charge of their duties, $610,000, of which amount $53,300 sha ll be immediately available : Provided, That this appropriation shall be availab le also for the authori zed sub sistenc e expens es of C onsul ar and F oreig n Se rvice offi cers while on temporary detail under commission . A LLO WAN CES FOR RENT, HEAT, FUE L, AND LIGHT, F ORE IGN SE RVI CE For rent, heat, fuel, and light for the Foreign Service for offices and grounds, and, as authorized by the Act approved June 26, 1930 (U. S . C., title 5, sec . 118a), for living quarters and not to exceed $1,140,000 for allowances for living quarters, including heat, fue l, and light, $2,000,000 : Provided, That payment for rent may be made in advance : Provided further, That the Secretary of State may enter into leases for such offices, grounds, and living quarters for periods not exceeding ten years : Provided further, That no part of this appropriat ion shall be used for allowances for living quarters, including heat, fuel, and light, in an amount exceeding $3,000 for an ambassador, minister, or charge d'affaires, and not exceeding $1,700 for any other Foreign Service officer : Provided further, That under this appropriation and the appropriations herein for " Con- t ingent e xpenses , Forei gn Servi ce", an d "Misce llaneou s salari es and allowances, Foreign Service", not more than $5,000 shall be expended f or custo dial se rvice, heat, fu el, and light f or each ambassa dor or minister occupying a Government-owned building for residence or residence and office purposes, and not more than $1,700 f or such purposes in the case of any other Foreign Service officer, and during the incumbency of a charge d'affaires the limitation on such expendi- tures shall be the same as for the occupancy by the principal officer . CO ST OF LIVING ALLOWANCE, FOREIGN SERVICE OFFICERS To carry out the provisions of the Act approved February 23, 1931 (U. S. C., title 22, sees . 12, 23c), relating to allowances and additional compensation to Diplomatic, Consular, and Foreign Serv- ice officers and clerks when such allowances and additional com- pensation are necessary to enable such officers and clerks to car ry on their work efficiently : Provided, That such allowances and addi- tional compensation shall be granted only in the discretion of the President, and under such regulations as he may prescribe, $2 80,000 . REP RESENT ATION ALLOWA NCES For representation allowances as authorized by the Act approved February 23, 1931 (IT . S . C ., title 22, sec . 12), $125,000 .
