75m CONGRESS, lam SESSION-CH . 403-JUNE 29, 1937 No part of any appropriation made in this Act shall be paid to any person employed under or in connection with the public schools of the District of Columbia who shall solicit or receive, or permit to be s olicit ed or receiv ed, on any p ublic-s chool premis es, an y sub- scription or donation of money or other thing of value from any pupil enrolled in such public schools for presentation of testimonials to school official s or for any, purp ose excep t such as may be a uthorized by the Board of Education at a stated me eting upon the written recommendation of the superintendent of schools . No money appropriated in this Act for the purchase of furniture and equipment and school supplies for the public schools of the District of Columbia shall be expended unless the requisitions of the Board of Education therefor shall be approved by the Commis- sioners of the District of Columbia, or by the purchasing officer and the auditor for the District of Columbia acting for the Commis- sioners . The Board of Education is authorized to designate the months in which the ten salary payments now required by law shall be made to teachers assigned to the work of instruction in nature study and school gardens . The child ren of offic ers an d men of the United State s Army , Navy, and Marine Corps, and children of other employees of the United States stationed outside the District of Columbia shall be admitted to the public schools without payment of tuition . BUIL DIN GS AND G ROUN DS Fo r comp leting the c onstru ction of a v ocation al sch ool fo r girl s, to replace the old Dennison School Building on S Street, on land owned by the District of Columbia at Arkansas Avenue and Allison Street Northwest, $236,000 : Provided, That the limit of cost fixed in the Act of June 23, 1936, is hereby incr eased from $280,000 to $336,000 . For beginning the construction of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Junior High School and Library, $300,000, of which sum $16,800 shall be ava ilable for t he pre parati on of p lans, specif icatio ns, an d administration ; the employment of such personal services to be without reference to section 3709 of the Revised Statutes (U . S . C., title 41, sec . 5), the Classification Act of 1923, as amended, and civil- service requirements ; and the Commissioners are authorized to enter into contract or contracts for such building or buildings at a cost not to exceed $800,000 : Provided, That the libr ary s hall be u nder the administration of the Board of Library Trustees of the Free Public Library ; For the construction of an eight-room addition to the Bundy School, including an assembly hall-gymnasium, and the necessary remode ling o f the presen t buil ding, $150,00 0 ; For beginning the construction of a vocational school to replace the present Lenox Vocational School, on land now owned by the District of Columbia at Potomac Avenue between Thirteenth and Fourt eenth Street s Sout heast, $160, 000, of which sum $ 7,560 shall be available for the preparation of plans, specifications, and administra- tion, and the Commissioners are authorized to enter into a contract or contracts for such building at a cost not to exceed $360,000 ; For the construction of a third-story addition to the Cleveland School to provide six additional rooms, $114,000 ; For beginning the construction of a new senior high school on a site alrea dy own ed by the Di strict of Col umbia at Fif th and Sheri dan Stree ts Nor thwest , $350 ,000, of whi ch sum $28,30 0 shal l be a vailab le for the preparation of plans, specifications, and administration ; the 371 Soliciting subscrip- tions, etc .
