PUBLIC-LANDS HIGHWAYS For the survey, construction, reconstruction, and maintenance of main roads through unappropriated or unreserved public lands, non- taxable Indian lands, or other Federal reservations other than the forest reservations, under the provisions of the Act of June 24, 1930 (U . S . C ., title 23, sec . 3), $2,500,000, to be immediately available and to remain available until expended, which sum is the amount author- ized for the fiscal year 1938 by section 3 of the Act approved June 16, 1936 (49 Stat ., p . 1520) : Provided, That the authorization of $2,500,000 for the survey, construction, reconstruction, and mainte- nance of public-lands highways, made applicable to the fiscal year 1938 by the Ag ricu ltu ral Appr opr iati on Act, fi scal ye ar 1937 , is hereby canceled . BUREAU OF AGR ICULTUR AL ENG INEERIN G SALARIES AND EXPENSES General administrative expenses : For necessary expenses for gen- eral administrative purposes, including the salary of Chief of Bureau and other personal services in the District of Columbia, $37,600 . Agricultural engineering investigations : For investigations, experi- ments, and demonstrations involving the application of engineering principles to agriculture, independently or in cooperation with Fed- eral, State, county, or other public agencies or with farm bureaus, organizations, or individuals ; for investigating and reporting upon the utilization of water in farm irrigation and the best methods to apply in practice ; the different kinds of power and appliances ; the flow of water in ditches, pipes, and other conduits ; the duty, appor- tionment, and measurement of irrigation water ; the customs, regu- lations, an d laws affe cting irrig ation ; snow surv eys a nd for ecast s of irrigation water supplies, and the drainage of farms and of swamps and other wet lands which may be made available for agricultural purposes ; for preparing plans for the removal of surplus water by drainage ; for developing equipment for farm irrigation and drain- age ; for investigating and reporting upon farm domestic water sup- ply and drainage disposal, upon the design and construction of farm buildings and their appurtenances and of buildings for processing and storing farm products ; upon farm powe r and mech anical far m equipment ; upon the engineering problems relating to the processing, transportation, and storage of perishable and other agricultural prod- uc ts ; and upon the e ngine ering probl ems i nvolve d in adapti ng ph ysi- cal characteristics of farm land to the use of modern farm machin- ery ; for investigations of cotton ginning under the Act approved April 19, 1930 (U . S .
