the reproduction by photolithography or otherwise of official plats of surveys ; for expenses of restoration to the public domain of lands in forest reserves and of lands temporarily withdrawn for forest- reserve purposes ; and for expenses of hearings or other proceedings held by order of the General Land Office to determine the character of lands, whether alleged fraudulent entries are of that character or have been made in compliance with the law, and of hearings in di sbarme nt pro ceedin gs, $1 5,000 . Surveying public lands : For surveys and resurvey s of public lands, examination of surveys heretofore made and reported to be defective or fraudulent, inspecting mineral deposits, coal fields, and timber districts, making fragmentary surveys, and such other surveys or ex aminat ions a s may be req uired for id entific ation of lan ds for pur- poses of evidence in any suit or proceeding in behalf of the United States, under the supervision of the Commissioner of the General Land Office and direction of the Secretary of the Interior, $1,000,000, including not to exceed $5,000 for the purchase, exchange, operation, and maintenance of motor-propelled passenger-carrying vehicles Provided, That not to exceed $5,000 of this appropriation may be expended for salaries of employees of the field surveying service temporarily detailed to the General Land Office : Provided further, That not to exceed $10,000 of this appropriation may be used for the survey, classification, and sale of the lands and timber of the so-called Oregon and Californi a Railroad lands and the Coos Bay Wagon Road lands : Provided further, That this appropriation may be expended for surveys made under the supervision of the Commis- sioner of the General Land Office, but when expended for surveys that wo uld no t othe rwise be cha rgeabl e heret o it s hall b e reim bursed from the applicable appropriation fund, or special deposit . Registers : For salaries and commissions of registers of district land offices, $7 4,000 . Contingent expenses of land offices : For clerk hire, rent, and other incidenta l expense s of the district land offi ces, incl uding the expenses of depositing public money ; traveling expenses of clerks detailed to examine the books and management of district land offices and to assist in the operation of said offices, and for traveling expenses of clerks transferred in the interest of the public service from one dis- trict land office to another, $160,000 : Provided, That no expenses chargeable to the Government shall be incurred by registers in the conduct of lo cal la nd off ices e xcept upon pr evious speci fic au thori- zation by the Commissioner of the General Land Office . Payments to States of 5 per centum of proceeds from sales of public lands : For payment to the several States of 5 per centum of the net proceeds of sales of public lands lying within their limits, for the purpose of education or of making public roads and improvements, $2,000 : Provided, That expenditures hereunder shall not exceed the aggregate receipts covered into the Treasury in accordance with section 4 of the Permanent Appropriation Repeal Act, 1934 .
