NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY For laboratory and research work and other necessary work of the Naval Research Laboratory for the benefit of the naval service, including services of employees assigned to group IV (b) and those performing similar services carried under native and alien schedules in the Schedule of Wages for Civil Employees in the Field Service of the Navy Department, operation and maintenance of a laboratory, additions to equipment necessary properly to carry on work in hand, maintenance of buildings and grounds, temporary employment of such scientific and technical civilian assistants as may become necessary, and subscriptions to technical periodicals, to be expended under the direction of the Secretary of the Navy, $900,000. OPERATION AND CONSERVATION OF NAVAL PETROLEUM RESERVES To enable the Secretary of the Navy to carry out the provisions contained in the Act approved June 4, 1920, as amended (34 U. S. C., 41 Stat. 813 . conserve, 34 u. S. .5. Supp. IV, 524), requiring him to conserve, develop, use, and operate the naval petroleum reserves, $266,500, of which amount not to exceed $25,000 shall be available for employees assigned to group IV (b) and those performing similar services carried under native and alien schedules in the Schedule of Wages for Civil Employees in the Field Protection of Re. Service of the Navy Department: Provided, That out of any sums serve No. 1. appropriated for naval purposes by this Act, any portion thereof, not to exceed $10,000,000, shall be available to enable the Secretary of the Navy to protect Naval Petroleum Reserve Numbered 1, established by Executive order of September 2, 1912 pursuant to the Act of June 368sts.47. 25, 1910 (43 U.
